Top Ten Tuesday on Wednesday: Books Too Good to Review Properly

The last time I participated in Top Ten Tuesday was a few years back, but I've always kept my eye on it. Recently, I decided it was time to participate again. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, and this week's topic is Books Too Good to Review Properly.

Now, a stonking good book has never stopped me from reviewing it, but I never feel as if I've done the book justice. I've always wanted to be able to write a review of a book I've loved that's so good everyone who reads it will immediately get their hands on a copy to experience it for themselves.

I paged through my annual Best Reads lists, and the following made it to my list of books I wish I could've reviewed better. Like cream, these titles are the ones I wish would rise to the top of everyone's Need-to-Read lists.

City of Veils by Zoë Ferraris

The Last Policeman by Ben H. Winters

Lost Luggage by Wendall Thomas

The Darkness by Ragnar Jónasson

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

The Woman They Could Not Silence: One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men Who Tried to Make Her Disappear by Kate Moore

If you're wondering if there's any rhyme or reason to the order in which I placed the books, there is. The books are listed in reading order, from the ones read longest ago to the ones I read recently-- and they aren't all mysteries, are they?

If you'd like to participate in Top Ten Tuesday head on over to The Artsy Reader Girl to take a look at the upcoming list of topics and how the meme works.

  1. I really like this meme, Cathy! I've found, too, that there are books that are so good it's hard - no, impossible - to do them justice in a review or commentary. And I agree with you that the Ferrarris, the Bingham (must get back to that series!), and the Winters are up there. I appreciate the reminder of the Moore, too. That's been on my wish list...

  2. Cathy! Your review of LOST LUGGAGE was actually one of my very favorites--it's still quoted on my website-- so it's hard to imagine your doing a better job. Honored to be here and thank you.

  3. That's a great list, Cathy! Most I have heard of, but a few were new to me. I do sometimes find it hard to review a book I really loved. I just want to say "You have to read this book!"

  4. The Last Policeman is one I've been intrigued by for a while but I'm yet to read it. Happy reading. My TTT https://readwithstefani.com/books-too-good-to-review-properly/

  6. Most of your list is a good mix of books I have read, with the same high assessment of them, and titles that are waiting their turn on my TBR - thank you for the reminder about the Eskens book. I had missed Lost Luggage somewhere along the way, so I'll have to give that som consideration.

  7. I must read Lost Luggage! I keep letting that one slip by me. I enjoyed The Life We Bury and wish more people would read The Last Policeman trilogy. I would probably like City of Veils.

    1. I think you would, too. In fact, the entire trilogy is excellent.

  8. Cathy, I love this idea for a post. I've often struggled to review a favorite book to do it justice. I wholeheartedly agree that Wendall's Cyd Redondo books fall into that category. I enjoy them so much and try hard to convey the delight when reading them, but I'm not sure I do. Also, Allen Eskens' books are favorites that require lots of effort to review well. I might give this Top Ten Tuesday a try on my blog. I've now gone and looked at some of the others on That Artsy Reader Girl. I don't think I'd do it every Tuesday, maybe once a month or so. Thank you so much for bringing this fun idea to my attention.

    1. You're very welcome, Kathy! I won't be doing TTT every week, but each time a topic tickles my fancy, I'm certainly going to give it a try.

  9. I read Project Hail Mary as an ARC and it was almost impossible to review. Especially without spoilers. It definitely could have made my list this week. And Killers of the Flower Moon is waiting on my shelf, so I'm happy to see it made your list. Great choices!

    1. Listening to the audiobook version of Project Hail Mary after reading a physical copy of The Martian convinced me that audiobooks are the way to go with Weir's books. What an imagination this man has!

      Thanks for stopping by!
