July 2013 New Mystery Releases!

So far this summer has been an excellent time for reading. This past week I've read two "A+" books back to back. No wonder I call book time in the pool my PT (Prune Time)-- more than once it's been almost impossible for me to close the book and get out of the water!

The end of June is here, and it's time for me to share with you some of the books being released next month that I'm really anticipating. This month I succeeded in keeping the list to thirteen (my lucky number). I've included all the information you'll need to find any of these titles in your favorite book spots, and they are grouped by release date.  Book synopses are courtesy of Amazon.

I hope you're having as great a summer as I am-- Happy Reading!

Title: The Fire Witness
Author: Lars Kepler
Series: #3 in the Joona Linna series set in Stockholm, Sweden
ISBN:  9780374298661
Publisher: Sarah Crichton Books
Hardcover, 512 pages

Synopsis: "Flora Hansen calls herself a medium and makes a living by pretending to commune with the dead. But after a gruesome murder at a rural home for wayward girls, Hansen begins to suffer visions that are all too real. She calls the police, claiming to have seen a ghost, but only one detective puts aside his skepticism long enough to listen: Joona Linna.

Linna has spent more time at the scene of the crime than any other detective would. The case seems obvious on the face of it: One of the girls at the home escaped in the middle of the night, leaving behind a bloody bed with a hammer under the pillow. But why does Hansen insist that the murder instrument was a stone, not a hammer? And what’s the story behind the dark red grain of sand, almost like a splinter from a ruby, stuck beneath the dead girl’s fingernail? As Linna refuses to accept easy answers, his search leads him into darker, more violent territory, and finally to a shocking confrontation with a figure from his past.

Just as Lars Kepler’s
The Hypnotist and The Nightmare did, The Fire Witness has spent months at number one on the Swedish bestseller lists. As the newspaper Dagens Nyheter put it, you start the thriller “on the subway home, keep reading at the dinner table, and then don’t stop until well into the wee hours.” Kepler writes with the force of Stieg Larsson and the plotting of Jo Nesbø. The Fire Witness is an unflinching page-turner, sure to join the ranks of its predecessors as an international sensation.

  1. Thanks for the book news. I just have to curtail my anxiety about how much there is out there to read and remember this isn't work; it's fun.

I can't wait to read the reviews of those A-plus books.

    1. It's not work. It's fun! It's not work. It's fun! And-- as "Ernestine" would say, "That's the truth!"

  2. Ernestine! I love her! (And she's say it with a snort and a wink.)

It's fun. Read David Ellis' The Wrong Man -- a great legal thriller, well-plotted and quite witty, with some global politics thrown in.

A good, riveting book and iced tea as well as a/c is my idea of how to spent these hot days -- here in the 90s; in Arizona -- what? in the 120s? Stay cool.

    1. Yup. 120° by the weekend. My plans for plenty of tall, cold drinks and books in the shady end of the pool will go forward as planned. :-)

  3. I have an ARC of the C. J. Box book and can hardly wait to read it. Also in the middle of the new Karin Slaughter book and have a stack of others to read as well. I'm lost in a sea of new books - lovely position to be in.

  4. Omigod! I cannot even fathom 120 degrees. It hits 100 degrees in the Big Apple a few times each summer -- and we all hibernate in a/c.

I grew up in Chicago and it would go into the low 100s during August, and we'd all sit in front of the fan, doing nothing and drinking iced tea by the gallon.

    1. The saving grace with these high temperatures here in the desert is that the humidity tends to stay very low. I know people laugh when someone mentions "it's a dry heat," but I grew up in the Midwest. Low humidity makes a tremendous difference. Plus... I lived in this house for several years with no working central AC or evaporative cooler. I have all sorts of tricks for staying cool! LOL

  5. Mystery is one of my absolute favourite genres. I read them solely for enjoyment and find when I am in a reading rut there's nothing like a good mystery to get me out of my funk. I'll have to look up some of these. Thanks.

I think you're going to love Countdown City, too. I did.

  7. Yes! I agree that fiction, and sometimes especially crime fiction can get one out of a funk and raise one's mood. I say that, iced tea and chocolate -- in the summer chocolate frozen yogurt -- is the healthy way to deal with bad moods and tough times.
