March 2024 New Mystery Releases!

I'm eagerly awaiting our first trip this year to the Desert Botanical Garden, and what better way to pass the time than to share new books with all of you?

There's a little something for everyone in March. After a slow start, I've now had three Best Reads practically right in a row, and-- as with any new release post-- I'm wondering if there's another Best Read waiting for me in this list.

I've grouped my picks for the best new crime fiction in March according to their release dates. The book covers and synopses are courtesy of Amazon.

Let's see if I'll be adding any of these titles to your own Need to Read lists!

=== March 5 ===

Title: The Scream of Sins
Series: #6 in the historical mystery series featuring Simon Westow, a former workhouse orphan working as a thieftaker (recovering items stolen from the rich) in 1820s Leeds, England.
240 pages

Synopsis: "Leeds, October 1824. Thief-taker Simon Westow's job seems straightforward. Captain Holcomb's maid, Sophie, has stolen important papers that could ruin the family's reputation, and he's desperate for their return. But the case very quickly takes a murderous turn, and it becomes clear the papers are hiding a host of sins . . .

During the search, Simon's assistant, Jane, hears a horrific tale: men are snatching young girls from small towns for use by the rich. Those who are unwanted are tossed on to the streets of Leeds to survive among the homeless. With the help of an unlikely, deadly new companion, Jane will do everything to discover who's responsible and make them pay.

Can Simon and Jane recover Holcomb's letters and get justice for the stolen girls? It becomes a battle that might result in them losing everything . . . including their lives.

Title: Perfect Opportunity
Author: Steven F. Havill
Series: #26 in the Posadas County police procedural series set in southwestern New Mexico.
224 pages

Synopsis: "The morning after his eighty-seventh birthday bash, former Posadas County sheriff Bill Gastner drives past a couple of vehicles stopped on the highway shoulder. It's not an unusual sight: a sheriff's patrol unit, emergency lights ablaze, pulled in behind a pickup truck. The female deputy hasn't radioed for backup. But there's something about the scene that makes him feel uneasy.

The next day, Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman is called to a rather more dramatic and disturbing roadside scene, with the same truck the star of the show. But this time, its occupant is in no fit state to talk - his dead body stabbed through the chest with a Ka-Bar, a second corpse in the ditch beside the car.

What happened to the two men? And what
were the dead man and the deputy discussing in the quiet of pre-dawn the previous day?

The truth is more twisty and complex than even Estelle and her long-standing friend and former colleague Bill are ready for, and it will take all their combined years of experience to untangle the sorry tale and ensure justice is served.

Fans of CJ Box, Anne Hillerman and Terry Shames will love this thrilling, small-town Western mystery set in New Mexico, as will readers who love strong female protagonists and retired sleuthing heroes.

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill

First Line: Writing in the Boston Public Library had been a mistake.

Winifred "Freddie" Kincaid goes to the Boston Public Library to sit in the Reading Room to work on her novel. Everything comes to a grinding halt when a woman's scream shatters the quiet.

The scream throws Freddie into new friendships with three people sitting at the table with her-- Cain McLeod, Marigold Anastas, and Whit Metters-- and when they learn that a woman's body was found in the library, they decide to work together to find the killer. Each one of them has his or her own reasons for sitting at the table. It just so happens that one of them is a murderer.

But which one?

~

The joy of Sulari Gentill's The Woman in the Library is that it's a story within a story within a story, and each successive chapter reveals one or two more puzzle pieces for readers to ponder. I could compare the unfolding of the plot to peeling back the layers of an onion, but not only is that comparison worn out, but it also doesn't really fit. No, this story is a beauty, and much more like the slow but certain blossoming of a rose, petal by soft, scented petal.

A series of emails from Australian writer Hannah Tigone to Leo Johnson tells readers that Hannah is in Australia writing a novel about a murder set in the Boston Public Library and Leo is her American contact who reads Hannah's manuscript and searches out locations and offers tips on clarification.  But that's not the only thing going on with the Hannah and Leo layer. The Freddie/Cain/Marigold/Whit layer also blossoms with the steady infusion of kernels of information about each character. These stories play off each other beautifully.

The Woman in the Library is one of those books that you can't talk about very much without giving something away, so I'll just say this: I decided right at the beginning to let myself become a leaf caught in a current in the river. This means that I didn't bring out my deerstalker hat and magnifying glass in order to solve the mystery before the characters in the book had a chance to. No, I simply went along for the ride and enjoyed every page. Once the rose that is The Woman in the Library has completely blossomed, there was nothing left to do but marvel at the story Gentill created. Wow!

Title: Rock of Ages
Series: #8 in the Junior Bender contemporary series set in California
336 pages

*Upcoming review on Kittling: Books.

Synopsis: "Junior Bender, Los Angeles burglar and off-the-books detective to the felonious, is reminded that rock and roll will never die (no matter how fervently he wishes some of it would) when Hollywood's most dangerous geriatric mobster, Irwin Dressler, retains Junior's investigative services to solve a rather unharmonious problem.

Four of Dressler's old gangster colleagues have put together a national tour of once-popular rock bands they own a piece of: three nights of concerts by guys (and a few gals) who were big shots back in the 1960s and 1970s, and who are now hoping for one more gasp of glory with this nostalgia exhibition. The Rock of Ages tour has proved itself to be anything but a love fest: plenty of the bandmates have been feuding for forty years, and—perhaps unsurprisingly—drugs and bad behavior have created health, wellness, and legal problems for the musicians and managers. Plus there have been two near-fatal accidents that might have been attempted murders.

But they're not what Irwin Dressler is concerned about. It's that someone—one of his own colleagues—is using the tour as a front to steal Dressler's money. And that simply cannot be allowed.

Now the tour has pulled into LA, and Junior has one weekend to figure out who's to blame—a weekend that begins with his tires being slashed, threatening notes left on his car, and a theatrical backdrop falling on a drummer during the truly terrible first set of the first concert. To make things worse, Junior is saddled for the weekend with his teenage daughter, Rina, who lately has been much, much too interested in how her father earns his living. Can Junior recover Dressler's money, prevent a murder, talk his daughter out of pursuing a life of crime, and somehow survive all that bad music?"

I Have Sulari Gentill Covered!

Sulari Gentill is one of those authors who's gotten under my skin. She writes the Rowland Sinclair historical series set in Australia. I tried the first in that series, but it failed to grab me; however, Sulari just won't leave me alone. When I watched a virtual event from The Poisoned Pen in which she mentioned she had a standalone book coming out that had a lot to do with The Poisoned Pen's owner, Barbara Peters, that was it. This would be the book that would get me to read Sulari Gentill again.

The Woman in the Library is the book, and here is a synopsis of it:

"The ornate reading room at the Boston Public Library is quiet, until the tranquility is shattered by a woman's terrified scream. Security guards take charge immediately, instructing everyone inside to stay put until the threat is identified and contained. While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers, who'd happened to sit at the same table, pass the time in conversation and friendships are struck. Each has his or her own reasons for being in the reading room that morning―it just happens that one is a murderer.

This sounds like something straight out of Agatha Christie, doesn't it? I'll be reading and reviewing it for its June 7 release date, but let's take a look at the covers for its US and Australian editions.

These are definitely two very different approaches to the same book, aren't they?

There's something vaguely sinister about the dark colors, the misty, foggy edges, and the hand reaching for the book on the US cover. Could that be a book of poisons? The white title and the font the publisher has chosen stand out well against the dark background, and there is something about the cover that harks back to an earlier time in publishing.

The Australian edition hails an earlier time in publishing, too. With its bright colors, its damsel-in-distress, and that ominous black-gloved hand, the Australian cover is straight from the 1960s. It even reminds me a bit of the Hitchcock classic, Psycho.

Now... which edition of The Woman in the Library would be more likely to stop me in my tracks and make me pick it up to take a look? I have to admit that the Australian cover is the one for me. I suppose it's that nostalgic '60s vibe that wins me over.

How about you? Which cover do you prefer? US? Australian? Neither one? Too close to call? Inquiring minds would love to know!

A Few Right Thinking Men by Sulari Gentill

First Line: It wasn't right.

Rowland Sinclair is the third son of a very wealthy Australian family. The second son was killed in World War I, and the first son, Rowland's brother Wilfred, is in charge of the estate. It's 1931, and Rowland lives in Sydney, painting in his superbly tailored three-piece suits and handing out free room and board to his friends Edna (sculptress, actress, and sometime life model), Milt (poet and ardent Communist), and Clyde (a fellow painter). Rowland's money and laissez-faire attitude to politics have sheltered him from the mounting tensions spawned by the Great Depression, and his friends have him at odds with his very conservative brother.

Only his bachelor uncle is a kindred spirit, and when the elder Rowland Sinclair is brutally murdered, his nephew is determined to find his killer-- even if it means putting his own life in danger.

Author Sulari Gentill is absolutely brilliant at setting the stage for her first Rowland Sinclair mystery. Her historical and societal contexts bring this era in Australia to life-- and also shows eery similarities to the world today. She also establishes a stellar cast with Rowland, his brother Wilfred, sister-in-law Kate, and his friends Edna, Milt, and Clyde.

The only drawback to A Few Right Thinking Men is that Gentill concentrates so much on setting her stage that the mystery felt almost non-existent. It took a long time for Rowland to really get moving on his investigation into his uncle's death and the conclusion of it occurred behind the curtains, which always annoys me.

Be that as it may, I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. With a slight touch of Lord Peter Wimsey in his Harriet Vane days, this is a series that should easily appeal to fellow fans of Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs and Kerry Greenwood's Miss Phryne Fisher.

December 2016 New Mystery Releases!

Somehow, someway, it's the last month of the year, and I'm already seeing "Best of" lists cropping up. I have my own Best of list on the sidebar of my blog all year long, but I may do something about posting it in its entirety this year. I know that many of you who are faithful readers (thank you!) don't visit the blog in order to read what I've got to say.

I've got a lot to say recently. All I've got to do is find the time to write it all down and schedule it to post. Post? You should see the yellow, orange, and purple post-it notes stuck all over the top of my desk!

But this post should be all about my picks of the brand-new crime fiction being released throughout the month of December. Books to add to your personal wish lists, perhaps books to buy for the readers in your life. I have them all grouped according to release date, and I've included all the information you'll need to find them at all your favorite book procurement sites. Book synopses are courtesy of Amazon. Let's take a look at the list!

Title: A Decline in Prophets
Series: #2 in the Rowland Sinclair historical series set in 1930s Australia.
ISBN:  9781464206832
Publisher: Poisoned Pen Press
Paperback, 332 pages

Synopsis: "Travel back in time to 1932 and book a first-class suite on the passenger liner RMS Aquitania, but take care, for among your fellow passengers is a ruthless killer….

Direct threats from Australia’s warring Right and the Left having quieted, wealthy Rowland Sinclair and his group of bohemian friends are their way home to Sydney via New York after a lengthy stay in Europe. The wealthy Sinclair scion has treated his artist friends to first-class accommodations on the Cunard ship, the luxury liner of the day. Also on board are some members of the Theosophical Society, one of those spiritualism movements that had a heyday in the early twentieth century, as well as an aggressively conservative Irish Catholic Bishop and his cohorts. Their clash ups the tensions in first class and presents the liner’s captain with a tricky situation when bodies start to drop.

It is Sinclair’s bad luck that he becomes a suspect in the first death, that of the Bishop’s beautiful young niece. But before the ship docks, he is cleared and the investigation, and further crimes, are taken ashore to the Australian capital and into some of its grand country houses.

Weaving historical fact, events, and people with fiction, Sulari Gentill has created a delightful and spirited crime story, the second in the Rowland Sinclair Mysteries, set against the public unraveling of the Theosophist Society. There’s an Evelyn-Waugh-meets-Agatha-Christie feel about this series and an extra treat in the New York scenes of A Decline of Prophets where one of Rowly’s boho friends, in fact the sculptress whom he loves, is romanced by the not well-known English actor Archie Leach.
