Dead Woman Driving: Dead in the Desert by Sue Ann Jaffarian

First Line: Even before she opened her eyes, Hope Callahan sensed she was moving.

Hope Callahan is no stranger to living a rough life. She ran away from home as a teen and has often found herself on the wrong side of the law. Her latest boyfriend had dreams of becoming a drug lord, and as a result, Hope is badly beaten and left for dead in the Sonoran Desert south of Tucson. Fortunately, she's found by Ozzie Byrd, a scruffy-looking old guy traveling in an RV with his three-legged dog named Punch. Ozzie has his own criminal past, but he does give Hope a chance at a new life. The question is: will she grab this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, or run from it, trying to stay alive on her own?

I'm no stranger to Sue Ann Jaffarian's writing, in particular her Odelia Grey mysteries. I've been following her on Facebook and vicariously enjoying her life. You see, Jaffarian retired from being a paralegal, bought an RV, and has been traveling the country, sharing her adventures in photos and prose along the way. When she mentioned her new serial novel Dead Woman Driving, I knew I had to read it.

I certainly wasn't disappointed. I was so engrossed in the story that the thirty-two pages flew by. Hope is going to be an interesting character.  She's a good person, but since she's a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks, readers are never going to know what skills she has in her repertoire to confront anything her travels throw at her. Ozzie and his three-legged dog Punch were perfect companions for Hope.

Dead Woman Driving is going to be just the thing for readers who only have short periods of time in which to read. If each installment is around thirty pages, Jaffarian's intriguing storylines and well-developed characters are going to suck readers in and leave them waiting impatiently for the next installment. I know I am.

December 2017 New Mystery Releases!

Nothing can make me feel more like an old fart than what seems to me to be the rapid progression of time. There's no way that Thanksgiving should be in my rearview mirror and Christmas looming ever closer in front of me. In fact, I'm finding that so difficult to accept that I'm sitting here with my choices for the best new crime fiction being released throughout the month of December instead of going out and putting up Christmas decorations. (Those two Santa lamp finials and that one Christmas chair cushion will be enough. Right?)

Well, if you're delaying the inevitable like I am, stay where you are and take a look at my list. It's organized by release date, and hopefully I've included a title or two that will tickle your fancy... or perhaps the fancy of some folks on your gift-buying list. Covers and synopses are courtesy of Amazon. Let's take a look at the list!

Anthropologist Jeremy Engels, who returns like Indiana Jones from an African dig, is eager to rekindle their romance and offer his help. Together, they plan to crash Flynn's high school reunion, a re-creation of his senior prom, and interview his fellow students. Time isn't of the essence with a ten-year-old cold case. Right? Her Gramps is convinced the killer is long gone, just like the illegally captured brown bear she helped save, now roaming free in the woods. Thugs and Kisses by Sue Ann Jaffarian

First Line: "Why am I not surprised?"

Paralegal Odelia Grey doesn't know which way to jump. Not only was the class bully murdered at her thirtieth high school reunion, her boss has also gone missing. Fortunately, someone else makes the decision for her as to which case to concentrate on. Now if they could only "decide away" the tangled connections, buyer's remorse, and contract killers that she discovers. Oh well, at least this helps Odelia keep her mind off her foundering relationship with Greg.

If you like fun, suspenseful mysteries with realistic, well-drawn characters, and a wonderful sense of humor, I bid you welcome to the world of Odelia Grey. This paralegal does not fit the Los Angeles area's size 0 body criteria, but she more than makes up for it with her warm heart, her sense of humor, and her sharp detecting skills.

Odelia's relationship with Greg has hit a snag. He's called an end to it because he doesn't like the way her amateur investigations put her in danger. But if she had her way, she wouldn't lift a finger to help police find Donny Oliver's killer; the class bully was beyond cruel. Moreover, if her law firm wasn't paying her to find her annoying boss, Michael Steele, she wouldn't bother with him either-- she's enjoying the peace and quiet.

Thugs and Kisses contains a good, solid mystery with plenty of tension at the end. It also reveals what happened to Odelia at her high school senior prom, and it's guaranteed to make anyone shrivel up in sympathy. Jaffarian skillfully combines a wide range of emotions with her tight plotting and nuanced characterizations to make a series that's so much fun to read. Odelia walks roughshod over clichés and worn-out expectations and right into your kitchen to share a chat over a cup of coffee. I've come to rely on my fictional best friend Odelia to deliver a dose of smarts, heart, and humor.

Title: A Decline in Prophets
Series: #2 in the Rowland Sinclair historical series set in 1930s Australia.
ISBN:  9781464206832
Publisher: Poisoned Pen Press
Paperback, 332 pages

Synopsis: "Travel back in time to 1932 and book a first-class suite on the passenger liner RMS Aquitania, but take care, for among your fellow passengers is a ruthless killer….

Direct threats from Australia’s warring Right and the Left having quieted, wealthy Rowland Sinclair and his group of bohemian friends are their way home to Sydney via New York after a lengthy stay in Europe. The wealthy Sinclair scion has treated his artist friends to first-class accommodations on the Cunard ship, the luxury liner of the day. Also on board are some members of the Theosophical Society, one of those spiritualism movements that had a heyday in the early twentieth century, as well as an aggressively conservative Irish Catholic Bishop and his cohorts. Their clash ups the tensions in first class and presents the liner’s captain with a tricky situation when bodies start to drop.

It is Sinclair’s bad luck that he becomes a suspect in the first death, that of the Bishop’s beautiful young niece. But before the ship docks, he is cleared and the investigation, and further crimes, are taken ashore to the Australian capital and into some of its grand country houses.

Weaving historical fact, events, and people with fiction, Sulari Gentill has created a delightful and spirited crime story, the second in the Rowland Sinclair Mysteries, set against the public unraveling of the Theosophist Society. There’s an Evelyn-Waugh-meets-Agatha-Christie feel about this series and an extra treat in the New York scenes of A Decline of Prophets where one of Rowly’s boho friends, in fact the sculptress whom he loves, is romanced by the not well-known English actor Archie Leach.

Synopsis: "NYPD Detective Claire Codella is chomping at the bit for a new case. Lieutenant McGowan is determined to keep her out of the news, but she’s about to be back in the public eye in a big way.

Broadway legend Lucy Merchant has tragically succumbed to early onset Alzheimer’s. At age fifty-six, she’s tucked away in the dementia care unit of the ultra-exclusive Manhattan care facility Park Manor. When she falls asleep and doesn’t wake up, her billionaire husband is ready for the funeral, but her daughter demands an investigation.

Only three months back on the job after cancer treatment, Codella finds herself at the center of a high profile case nearly everyone--especially her lieutenant--wants to shut down. But the forensic evidence raises alarming questions and Codella needs answers. To find them, she will have to crack the defenses of slippery administrators, frightened caregivers, and unobliging family members, all while unlocking some of her own dark memories.

Forgotten City, Carrie Smith’s gripping follow-up to Silent City, pits the unrelenting detective against a cast of diverse New Yorkers driven by their desires and ambitions and haunted by their pasts. But can she piece together the truth before the murderer kills again?
