The Calling Alexa to the Stand Weekly Link Round-Up

After reading a certain news article, I am very glad that I don't talk to myself. Well, not very often anyway. And before you get your hopes up too high, this isn't about our Alexa here at Casa Kittling. This is about someone else's Alexa.

We call Alexa to the stand!
A man in Arkansas has been accused of killing his friend after a night of drinking and football. His attorney has been fighting with Amazon to turn over recordings from the accused's Amazon Echo smart speaker (AKA Alexa) as evidence to prove the man's innocence. After some legal wrangling, Amazon finally agreed to turn them over. These things are not only listening to us, they're recording us, too.

So... if Alexa is sitting in your home and you're plotting your latest mystery, it might be a very good idea to be very, very quiet!

On that note, I'm going to tippy toe out to the corral to take care of these links. Head 'em up! Mooooooove 'em out!

  1. That's so interesting, Cathy! My husband and I were just having a conversation yesterday about Alexa recording what we say. Lots of implications there! Anyway, thanks as always for the great links. Off to that Greek shipwreck...

    1. Yes, there are a lot of implications, and I can see why Amazon put up such a fight, BUT--- why didn't they save themselves potential headaches and not program the things to record in the first place?!?

  2. Great batch of links. I always enjoy the lists.

Hmmm, Big Sister is watching, listening and recording. That is awful. People can record their spouses, bosses can tape their employees, etc. And then for something used in a house, car, office, to be used in a legal case is awful.

People just shouldn't buy them until Amazon eliminates the recording device. Can't they be purchased without the taping? If someone wants to tape something or record it on a cell phone, then it's one's own act.

Bah to Alexa. I wouldn't have her in my house.

    1. I could do without her, but she belongs to Mr. Gadget.

  3. We may differ on what to do with her, but I'd banish Alexa from recording me or listening to me. Now having her play Reveille in the morning is great.
But until Alexa can actually do the housework, I'd have her take a vacation or sit in the basement and come out at specific times.

  4. My son is in the process of applying to law school and we just talked about that very news story! There won't be an Alexa or Google Home under our tree this year!

    1. I understand completely! Monday afternoon I had a bit of a catastrophe. As I was sitting on the edge of the bed surveying the damage, I will admit that I was cussing up a blue streak-- with passion and with brio. Then I remembered. I turned to Denis's side of the bed and said, "And I hope you recorded every syllable of that, Alexa!"

  5. Hah! I'd banish her to the basement until further notice.

    1. One must first have a basement in order to even contemplate that line of action.
