I Have Anne Perry Covered!

One day soon I want to find some hard facts about book cover design. Unfortunately, it seems to be one of those topics closely related to walking into a room and forgetting what I went in there for. I love it when that happens....

Wouldn't it be nice to have some cold hard facts? How much covers impact sales. What colors and images sell best. Are there design differences between genres... all sorts of questions run through my mind. I'd better make a note of this so I will remember to do some research. I don't want to forget it. Again.

In the meantime, let's take a look at the US and UK covers of Anne Perry's latest book, An Echo of Murder

This is a week when I'm going to give a thumbs-down to both covers. Although I do think that the US cover is pretty and that the author's name stands out sharply, this cover is so generic that it really doesn't speak to me.  On the other hand, I find the UK cover more visually interesting, but it's almost too busy, and the colors are downright drab. I'd probably walk right past it in the bookstore and not notice it was there. The same goes for the US cover, so generic that it doesn't stand out.

What say all of you? You know I don't mind being disagreed with. Which cover do you prefer? US? UK? Too close to call? Or... are you like me and don't care for either one? Inquiring minds would love to know!

  1. Hmm....well, neither cover really draws me in, either, Cathy. If I had to choose, I'd say UK only because it's got what feels like a little more depth to it. But It's not 'wow,' that's true.

    1. And this is a time when I haven't read the book, so I can't say if either cover has anything to do with the story.

  2. I kind of agree. The British cover's colors are too drab.

I like the colors on the U.S. cover, but to me there's nothing mysterious on it, nothing indicating a murder or a menace. It doesn't lure one into the book.

    So I guess neither one.

    1. Yes, the US cover almost looks like a "welcome home" cover, which is rather strange for a mystery.

  3. Yes. Welcome to hearth and home. Not even a dead body, the legs of a dead body peeking out, drops of blood, nothing.
