On My Radar: Elly Griffiths

Believe it or not, I don't subscribe to a lot of author newsletters, so it's pure serendipity when I stumble across mention of the next book by one of my favorite writers. When I happened upon this week's exciting find, I was looking for mosquito coils in order to set up a smoke screen so the little buggers can't find me when I'm outside minding my own business. Oh... just as a matter of trivia, I've seen that mosquitoes prefer the taste of untanned skin. (I'm fairly certain you can deduce how I've learned that.) But I'm paying altogether too much attention to these little beasts. This is a book blog, not a skeeter blog, so let's move right along to the book that made me do a happy dance when I stumbled across it!

UK edition available February 23, 2017!

Here's the synopsis of the ninth Dr. Ruth Galloway mystery:

Boiled human bones have been found in Norwich's web of underground tunnels. When Dr Ruth Galloway discovers they were recently buried, DCI Nelson has a murder enquiry on his hands. The boiling might have been just a medieval curiosity - now it suggests a much more sinister purpose.

Meanwhile, DS Judy Johnson is investigating the disappearance of a local rough sleeper. The only trace of her is the rumour that she's gone 'underground'. This might be a figure of speech, but with the discovery of the bones and the rumours both Ruth and the police have heard that the network of old chalk-mining tunnels under Norwich is home to a vast community of rough sleepers, the clues point in only one direction. Local academic Martin Kellerman knows all about the tunnels and their history - but can his assertions of cannibalism and ritual killing possibly be true?

As the weather gets hotter, tensions rise. A local woman goes missing and the police are under attack. Ruth and Nelson must unravel the dark secrets of The Underground and discover just what gruesome secrets lurk at its heart - before it claims another victim.

As I said in the caption beneath the graphic of the book cover, this is the UK edition, which will be available on February 23, 2017. If you're more patient than I am, the US edition (with a completely different cover) will be released on May 30, 2017.

I know that there are a lot of fellow Ruth Galloway fans who read this blog, so be honest. How many of you are going to pre-order the UK edition? Inquiring minds would love to know!

  1. I very much want to read this one, too, Cathy. I do love this series, no doubt about that! You know, I ought to hide my credit card when I visit your blog... ;-)

  2. OK, I'll raise my hand and wave it wildly! Yes, I knew about this one and I wasn't even looking for mosquito coils (really, Cathy? are they found with the books? LOL LOL). As long as Griffiths continues writing about Ruth, I'll be there. :-)

    1. Well, I was searching for mosquito coils at 3 AM on Amazon, and Amazon knows that I pay more attention to books than anything else on their website, so they always throw in ads for books they think I'll like. They can get ya coming and going!

  4. Well, I still have The Woamn in Blue to read so I shall save it for a month or two and then I won't have too long to wait for this new book. I didn't know about it so am thrilled to bits to see it here.

    1. Another author I love-- Steve Hockensmith-- had his Holmes on the Range series canceled by the publisher. I've been hanging onto the last book... just couldn't force myself to read it and bring the series to an end. I just heard that the series will be continuing, so now I can read that book!

  5. Oh, (sigh), I'll hide my credit card at my neighbor's apartment for awhile. I will be (im)patient and wait until the library gets the book.

There are so many new books by favorite authors coming up that I am waiting for the library to get -- and not spend money. But it's a tough wait. So I juggle the list and prioritize what is in their system.

However, today I came home with three library books, a Larry Sweazy and two psychological suspense women-in-peril books I keep telling myself not to read. But, I find them at the library and my free will is gone. And then I'm up all night and jumping at the least noise in the hallway.

I just read Sarah Hilary"s first book "Someone Else's Skin." It kept me up all night and I got nothing else done. But it is brutal. Do I need this She writes unputdownable thrillers, but so tough to deal with the characters and violence.

Anyway, Ruth Galloway is a breath of fresh air in comparison.

Glad Ruth Galloway is still investigating and Harry Nelson is still policing. I want to see what happens with Nelson and his own spouse after the goings-on in the previous book.
