Saturday Snapshot-- Resemblances

To see what other participants have posted, visit Saturday Snapshot's base, At Home With Books. You'll also find the easy rules and regs there, just in case you want to join in the fun. (Of course you do!)

This week I'm doing something a bit different. I always enjoy it when others share family photos, so I'm going to share some of mine. (Click on the photos to view them in larger sizes.)

The first pairing shows a couple, Fred and Mable Brookshier Wickline, who had their photo taken in the 1890s. When you look at it, then look at the photo of my cousin Stan Brookshier taken when he was serving in the Marines during the Vietnam War, can you see any family resemblance at all???

Mable, Fred and Stan, 75 years apart

As far as I know, this second isn't a family resemblance so much as it's just plain strange. The photograph is of my husband, Denis. The painting, called Gentleman in a Railway Carriage, was painted by James Tissot in 1872. Isn't the resemblance amazing??

    1. So do I. I wish I had the photos my grandmother displayed for years. One was a baby photo of my mother, the other was a baby photo of me. You couldn't tell us apart except by the age of the photographic paper!

  2. Such a neat juxtaposition and yes ... amazing similarities!

    1. We are, all, so much more alike than we arr different. I wish everyone could see that!

  3. Wow, it's as if Dennis posed for the painting!

  4. Cathy - Oh, my goodness that resemblance is startling!! Sure there's no family connection to man in the Tissot painting?

    1. Denis doesn't know much about his family history, so I imagine we'll never know.

  5. Funny how family resemblance sticks around through the generations and never seems to get watered down. Here's Mine

    1. I wish I had a photo of Stan without the helmet and in black and white. He and Fred look like brothers!

  6. In the first one, there are innumerable similarities, from face shape to eyes...spot on!

The same is true of the second one! I do enjoy the game of seeing what features "come from" which family member. It starts the moment a new child is born.

Thanks for sharing....and here's MY SATURDAY SNAPSHOT POST

    1. That reminds me of the conversation my mother had with my blind great-grandfather just after I was born.

  8. Yes, I do see the resemblance in both groupings. The difference in the second is that Denis looks much more comfortable. Aren't we lucky to have been born long after such stuffy styles were gone?

    1. Thank God I don't live when women's fashions were so restrictive that you couldn't do much of anything without fainting! Perfect observation, Barbara!

  9. I see the resemblance in both cases! Maybe that gentleman is a long lost relative of Denis.

    1. Wouldn't it be stuff of the Twilight Zone if he were?!?

  10. Definitely seeing the resemblance in the eyes in the first two. I love seeing family connections across time. And that second pairing is just uncanny!

    1. Those family resemblances are one of the reasons why I love looking at old photographs.

  11. Your husband would have fit right in back then! :) And the family resemblance in the first set is striking!

    1. Well, Denis *is* a gentleman, but I don't think he'd want anything to do with that man's clothing. Tissot's gentleman looks uncomfortable!

  12. There is a resemblance and similarities in both photos. Is it like deja vu?

  13. Ooooh... eerie similarities. If you go back in history far enough I suppose we are all related!

    1. We *are*-- but you have to go back quite a ways!

  14. They are both very similar - quite uncanny. I've been photographing woodland scenes rather than people (http://chriscross-thebooktrunk.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/witches-woods-and-saturday-snapshots.html) but maybe I'll dig out some family pictures one week.

  17. Too cool. The woman in the photo looks she is not having a good day.

    1. I wondered if anyone would say something about Mable! No, she doesn't look happy at all! She either hated having her picture taken, or her teeth hurt, or.....

  18. Definitely a resemblance around the eyes in the top photos but the second one - it's like the same person!!!

  20. Wow - is Denis a Dorian Grey - been around for a few hundred years? Startling resemblance.

I think cousin Stan looks a lot like Mabel - what's the relationship?

Really loved your photos this week!

    1. Perhaps Denis *is* Dorian Grey... he has a decided lack of interest in the historical. ;-)

As for Stan, there is a bit of resemblance to Mable, who's a great-great aunt or something of the sort, but he's actually a clone of Fred. (I have the advantage of knowing him without the helmet.)
