Iain Pears' Art History Mystery Series

Iain Pears, better known for writing books like An Instance of the Fingerpost, has also written a mystery series that deserves a lot more attention. Called the Art History series, it features Jonathan Argyll, an English art dealer, and Flavia di Stefano of the Art Theft Squad in Rome, Italy. Pears' background as an art historian shows in this series, creating mysteries that are involving and filled with interesting information . The two main characters are well-drawn, and their interaction with each other is one of the draws of these books for me.

If you like mysteries spiced with fun characters, Italian and other European settings, and art, you can't go wrong with this series.

1. The Raphael Affair (1990)
2. The Titian Committee (1991)
3. The Bernini Bust (1992)
4. The Last Judgement (1993)
5. Giotto's Hand (1994)
6. Death and Restoration (1996)
7. The Immaculate Deception (2000)
