February 2023 Additions to My Digital Security Blanket

Believe it or not, I exercised some restraint in my eBook and audiobook buying in February. Granted, there really weren't all that many amazing deals on books I was interested in, but I also seem to be developing a newfound objectivity. How many of that author's books do I already have sitting on my Kindle? Can I justify buying another one just because the price is right even though I haven't touched the others? Should I really indulge in that audiobook sale when my listening time has plummeted and I have so many others waiting for my attention?

Methinks, the proof will come when the amazing deals begin appearing once more. Wouldn't you agree?

Here are the eBooks I purchased last month. I've grouped them according to genre/subgenre, and if you click on the link in a book's title, you'll be taken to Amazon US where you can learn more about it.

Let's see what I couldn't resist!

=== Police Procedural ===

 ■ I've been a dedicated fan of Deborah Crombie's Duncan Kincaid and Gemma Jones series since the very first book, so there's no way I'd miss the newest one after such a long wait. I rank Crombie's books right up there with Ann Cleeves' and Elly Griffiths'. I hope you're all sitting down because... I paid full price!

Dead Point by LaVonne Griffin-Valade. Set in Oregon.

■ This is a book where the price was right and the synopsis intriguing. Hopefully, I didn't get suckered by the mention of Walt Longmire in that plot summary! Needless to say, we shall see.

===Historical Mystery===

 Deadly Shoals by Joan Druett. Set in the Patagonia area of South America in the nineteenth century.

■ New Zealand writer Joan Druett writes superb books of maritime history as well as this mystery series set in 1838 and featuring Wiki Coffin, a half Māori half American translator, aboard the American South Seas Exploring Expedition. This was the only book in the series I was missing, and when the price was reduced, I swooped in to snatch it up.

The Cliff's Edge by Charles Todd. Set in England.

■ Todd's series featuring World War I nurse Bess Crawford is one that I've followed from the beginning. This is one of my favorite periods of history, having become fascinated with it after watching Testament of Youth a few decades ago. I like how this series has unfolded, and now that the war is over, I'm really looking forward to seeing which path Bess chooses to follow in her life.

I know at least one of you has already read Crombie's book, but what about the rest of you? Do any of these tickle your fancy? Which ones? Inquiring minds would love to know!

  1. I'm doing the same... trying to be a just a little more circumspect in my buying of new Kindle books. That's not to say I'm on a book buying ban, not at all, just thinking about the 600+ unread books sitting on my Kindle already and asking myself 'Do I really need this?' But good offers are so hard to resist. Amazon of course know this...

    1. Yes, they do-- and I think you may have more books on your Kindle than I do. I think I'm a bit relieved! LOL

  2. I look at your list, Cathy, and what's the first thing I see? A Deborah Crombie! I like her work quite a lot, but I haven't read her in a while. I hope you'll like that one, and it's good to have a reminder....

  3. What I can say is - I think I'm the one or one of the people who has read the Crombie book. It's a good one. I do understand what you're saying about buying the books, Cathy. I go through periods where I scold myself because, honestly, I'm not sure I can read all the books I own right now, much less ones I might add. However, where's the fun of 'getting a deal' or snatching up the newest one (even if you pay full price). Enjoy!

    1. Knowing how far behind I am with so many of the series I read, I'm not a bit surprised! ;-)

  5. Don't know. Have so many lists of books from this blog and other websites, the NY Times and more that I'm underneath a ton of books and papers with lists. I'll wait for the reviews.
