Nest Building

I thought you might like to see a photo of a hummingbird in the process of building her nest. This was in the hummingbird aviary at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, and as you can see, she didn't seem very concerned that I was watching her every move. All the building materials and the spider web she uses to hold everything together fascinate me. The nest is a marvel that expands as the chicks grow.

I love hummingbirds. They're feisty little jewels.

  1. Nature never ceases to amaze. So many species, so many ways to reproduce new lives and sustain them. It is a wonder. Glad you saw this.

    1. I love seeing them, too-- and I'm so lucky because hummingbirds live here in Phoenix year-round.

  3. Oh, that's gorgeous, Cathy! Hummingbirds are fantastic, and it's hard sometimes to see them clearly. But they're amazing little critters. Thanks for sharing the beauty.

  4. What an amazing picture! Hummingbirds are such incredible creatures and you're right, she looks completely unfazed by your snooping.

    1. It might have been a different story if I hadn't had a good zoom lens on my camera!

  5. We generally get Rufous Hummingbirds at this time of year but I haven't seen a single one yet. My feeders are filled and ready for them if they do show up. "Show" always being the operative word with hummers.

    1. I get the treat of seeing an occasional Rufous as it passes through on its migration.

  6. Wow, that is really cool. I have never seen a nest, although I usually see them in the yard in the summer.

    1. I'd seen finished ones before. This was my first time actually watching a hummer construct one.

    1. I'd never seen one sitting in one that was only partially completed. :-)

  9. Does Papa Hummingbird help? In some bird types, they do a lot to get food and fend off predators. And in emus and ostriches, the dads sit on the eggs and then do childcare.

    1. Papas tend to be rolling stones that don't hang around much.
