On My Radar: Elly Griffiths' The Last Remains!

If you're thinking to yourself, "Wasn't Elly Griffiths on Cathy's radar just a week or so ago?" you're right. She was. The thing is... Griffiths is one of my Top Ten authors, so every time I hear that she's got a new book coming out, I dance my Happy Dance and then I want to tell everyone else about it. So I won't waste any time because it's a new Ruth Galloway mystery!!!

UK Release: February 2, 2023!

Synopsis:

"When builders renovating a café in King's Lynn find a human skeleton in the wall, they immediately call for DCI Harry Nelson and Dr Ruth Galloway, Head of Archaeology at the nearby University of North Norfolk. Ruth is preoccupied with the possible closure of her department and by the fact that Nelson and his wife are now living separately. Nevertheless she agrees to take on the case.

She sees immediately that the bones are modern and they are soon identified as the remains of Katherine Sands, who went missing in the 1990s. Katherine attended a spiritual well-being course and suspicion falls on the leader of the course - Ruth's friend, Cathbad.

The Police start to investigate the group and find that there are other missing women, making matters even worse for Cathbad. The trail leads Nelson to the famous Neolithic flint mines in Grimes Graves and to an archaeology group. Ruth agrees to infiltrate the group and there meets a figure from her own past. Soon the race is on to exonerate Cathbad, but will Ruth and Nelson uncover the truth in time to save their friend?

As you undoubtedly noticed, this is the UK release of The Last Remains. If you didn't notice, please don't think mean things about me. You see, I love this series so much that I don't want to wait for the US edition; I order it from the UK. Elly Griffiths and William Shaw are really the only two authors I do this with, so it's not like I'm going hog wild and acting like I'm a bazillionaire.

On her Facebook page, Griffiths has said that a question is answered in this book: Will Ruth and Nelson, or won't they? It will be interesting to see what Griffiths has decided, and I can't wait to find out. How about you? I know some of you are fellow fans!

  1. What nerve! The publisher put this new book out, and I haven't even gotten The Locked Room yet. (the problem with relying on British writers' books getting across the pond and then waiting for my library to get in the book and process it.) Finally, the book is at the nearest library branch so I can grab it and rush home, make iced tea, buy chocolate and turn off all means of communication and read it. I'm trying to figure out the earliest I can get there without being under the brutal sun.

    2. That's a kind offer. We'll see. I have to read The Locked Room first and my head is spinning as I have so many books on library reserve.

  2. P.S. If the will/won't they is in this book, I may also have to buy it from Amazon UK as the suspense will drive me up the wall. Glad Denis is coming home, and hope everything is ready for him. Have fun on those scooters (when he's ready).

    2. Great news. I hope he isn't in pain and I hope to hear some hooting and hollering from Phoenix.

  3. How exciting! She is such a hard-working writer, and I'm really looking forward to reading this one. I know what you mean, too, about authors you love so much you're willing to buy their work internationally. Some authors are just that talented...

  4. I am a fan! And this one sounds so good. I'm only a little sad I'm going to have to wait longer to read it. :)

  5. My reaction was/is similar to Kathy D's: I haven't gotten to read The Locked Room yet, because I'm still waiting for my turn for a library copy. I've been a little apprehensive about to pandemic shutdown aspect of that one, since I'm not sure I'm ready to read that much about it yet (the same way I don't read much about September 11th), but knowing there's another already on the way will help with that - especially with an emotional resolution pending.

    1. I didn't find her depiction of the pandemic off-putting at all. In fact, I appreciated learning how another country was dealing with the situation.

    1. History, mystery... but the key ingredients are the characters. I think this is a series you would enjoy, Dorothy.

  7. I agree. The series is the characters, whom readers get to know and care about.

  9. Oh, yay! And I bought the last one from Amazon UK. I'm almost 100% certain that I will do the same thing next year. I love this series and the 'will they or won't they' is such a tease. I'll ask for it for Christmas from family - I keep telling them that book money is best for me or gift card or whatever. Much rather have that. LOL

  10. OK. Funk time. Just read Griffiths says this is the last book in the Ruth Galloway series, and her publishers repeat that; She says in a PP interview that she still has a few more of these books to write. I hope so. Tears and wailing will be held across the pond from the U.S. to Europe at the demise of Ruth, Harry, Kate, Cathbad, Judy, etd. I'm already in tears over this. It's a special series. I went through menopause reading this series; it keps me going (and chocolate). No, no, don't stop writing about these characters. We protest.

    1. I look at it this way: perhaps she's said almost everything she has to say about these characters, so it's a good thing to end the series on a high note. AND... at least we still have Harbinder Kaur to look forward to!
