On My Radar: Fabian Nicieza's The Self-Made Widow!

I can't remember why I picked up Fabian Nicieza's Suburban Dicks, and I don't care. The co-creator of Deadpool gave me a main character named Andie Stern whom I took to my heart, a solid mystery to solve, and some delicious satire. I'd been told by the author that there would be a second mystery for Andie to solve; all I had to do was wait.  Well, now I've got the particulars, and since I've stopped dancing around the living room, I'll share them with you.

Available June 21, 2022!

Synopsis:

"After mother of five and former FBI profiler Andie Stern solved a murder—and unraveled a decades old conspiracy—in her New Jersey town, both her husband and the West Windsor police hoped that she would set aside crime-fighting and go back to carpools, changing diapers, and  lunches with her group of mom-friends, who she secretly calls The Cellulitists. Even so, Andie can’t help but get involved when the husband of Queen Bee Molly Goode is found dead. Though all signs point to natural causes, Andie begins to dig into the case and soon risks more than just the clique’s wrath, because what she discovers might hit shockingly close to home.

Meanwhile, journalist Kenny Lee is enjoying a rehabilitated image after his success as Andie’s sidekick. But when an anonymous phone call tips him off that Molly Goode killed her husband, he’s soon drawn back into the thicket of suburban scandals, uncovering secrets, affairs, and a huge sum of money. Hellbent on justice and hoping not to kill each other in the process, Andie and Kenny dust off their suburban sleuthing caps once again.
"

Who knew life in suburbia was so fraught with peril? (Good gravy, the mere anticipation of reading The Self-Made Widow has me waxing poetic!) For those of you who followed my advice last year and read Suburban Dicks, I know you're going to be looking forward to Andie's newest investigation. For those of you who haven't, what are you waiting for? Time's a'wastin'!

  1. Happy dance here! I was thinking yesterday about Suburban Dicks and wondering if another book was coming out soon. Can't wait for this one to come out.
What an enjoyable book that was, and Andie Sterm, with 4.8 children driving and running all over the place to solve a cold case with brains aplenty and as many children to drive everywhere. (And Barbara at the PP questioning the author as to how a woman with so many children could be a detective. I was laughing so hard as he defended his character's abilities.)

That title is hilarious. Does Andie bump off her undeserving, boring husband? Or just ignore him? I guess they stay together "for the sake of the children." I guess I'll look here to see when it's available. This is a definite, not a maybe.

  2. This sounds funny, and I love the title, Cathy! No wonder you're looking forward to it! Any author who can combine real wit with a crime novel plot that draws me in deserves a lot of credit! It's not easy to put those elements together.

  3. I remember you talking about the previous book. Need to try it. Have had my fill of 'psycho' thrillers for a bit. The protagonists have sent me over the edge with their anxiety and bad decisions. This series doesn't seem 'traditional' but it also sounds fun. I'm also catching up on a few series that I'm behind on.

    1. It's not traditional, and it is fun. It may just be the change of pace you need, Kay. I hope you give it a try.

  4. And there you go introducing me to another author and series that I need to add to my reading list! I can see I'm never going to catch up with my reading in this lifetime.

    1. Can you imagine the anxiety if we actually did catch up with all of our reading? The mad stampede to find more books to read? Yikes!

  5. I don't know the series, or even the author, but that title is a delight. Very clever.

  6. I remember your review of Suburban Dicks, especially because of the main character having children and fighting crime. But, guilty as charged, I haven't taken the time to read it. So many books, so little time...
