To continue our conversation from last Friday, Denis and I have officially canceled our trip to Left Coast Crime in Albuquerque, but in the process of doing so, I learned something that chapped my hide. There are 382 rooms in the hotel where Left Coast Crime is being held. Less than 10% of those 382 rooms are ADA rooms. (I was told less than 1%, but I can't believe that a hotel that's used for conventions and the like would only have three ADA rooms. If I'm wrong, my hide is even more seriously chapped.) This disparity is common. There are hotels with no ADA rooms at all. Evidently, folks with some sort of disability are either considered to be too poor to travel or too much of a hassle to deal with and we should either suck it up and cope with a regular room or stay home.
I'll keep my thoughts to myself on that one. We now have our sights set on Left Coast Crime in Tucson in 2023... and we'd better be able to get a room!
Now I'll share something with you-- a quote that I aspire to.
Enjoy the links while I go off to add a new bookmark to my collection!

I couldn't agree more about ADA rooms, Cathy! There's no reason there should be that disparity, and my wires are getting crisped just thinking about it! Grrr! I have to say I absolutely love that quote! I need that embroidered and hung on my wall! I'll look into that as soon as I get back from that Roman settlement...
ReplyDeleteHaving the quote embroidered so it can be hung on the wall is a fantastic idea, Margot!
DeleteSo frustrating and sorry you will miss it this year.
ReplyDeleteCold here and a dusting of snow, perfect time to check out your links and read! Have a good weekend!
I'm in the midst of reading two very good books, so I need to take care of business and get back to them. You have a good weekend, too, Julia!
DeleteI'm one of those who can't resist Wordle. Play it every day. I'm right there boiling with you over the attempts at book banning. Really, how stupid can people be? Pretty damn stupid, apparently.
ReplyDeleteThe situation with the lack of ADA rooms stinks. There really is no excuse for it.
Fascinating links, as usual. Thank you.
You're welcome, Dorothy-- and I know that I can find some interesting links over on your blog, too. Does that make us Link Magpies? ;-)
DeleteThat really is very frustrating about the lack of ADA rooms.
ReplyDeleteMore end-of-year book lists? Yay! I'm off to check them out.
Have a good weekend!
Those book lists are like Lays potato chips, aren't they? :-)
DeleteThis week's post inspires so many comments:
ReplyDeleteI agree that there should be *many more ADA rooms. Especially for the larger chain hotels, this shouldn't be difficult.
My sister and I had a conversation over Christmas about our joint aim to continue becoming feisty and/or troublesome (depending on your perspective). Needless to say, I LOVE the quote and will be sharing it.
Book banning makes my blood boil also - and don't get me started on the book burning that a purported pastor just held in Tennessee. Either way supports a dictatorial approach, and no one else gets to decide what ideas I do or do not explore. I'm saving some of your links (especially Machu Picchu!) for some fun reading after I chase down a rumor of a local town trying to ban a book - you'd think they'd learn from recent coverage of the other attempts.
And I had seen the polar bear pictures earlier this week - appropriately enough, in the Facebook group of Dana Stabenow followers. I thought then that you might know about them also.
Ah... am I getting too predictable with my link choices? ;-)
DeleteLove the quote! I'm so sorry that you will have to miss this year's Left Coast Crime and share your frustration with the lack of ADA rooms. Off to check some links.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend!
DeleteSo sorry, Cathy, to see that you have officially cancelled Left Coast Crime this year. I was hoping to meet up with you for a few minutes out there, but I'm still a little bit leery about staying in a large hotel right now. I'm happy to hear that 2023 is not all the way out on the Left Coast, so maybe I'll shoot for that one.
ReplyDeleteI do play Wordle, and one of the things I like best about it is that there is only one puzzle per day. That limits any real addiction problem for me to the point I don't worry about the five minutes I spend on it. I hope they never change that aspect.
I told someone else recently that I'm still not completely comfortable being indoors with a large group of people, so canceling was a good choice. Hopefully that feeling will have gone away by the time LCC 2023 arrives in Tucson (which is an even better fit for Denis and me).
DeleteI am sorry you won't be able to go to Left Coast this year. That is outrageous that they have so few ADA rooms. Especially in such a big hotel. I do hope it works out much better for next year.
ReplyDeleteI haven't played Wordle, although quite a few people I know are into it. I enjoyed the article on Eleanor Roosevelt. Thank you for sharing!
I love reading about Eleanor Roosevelt. She's one of my heroes. Thanks for stopping by!
