On My Radar: Jess Montgomery's The Echoes!

Sometimes (but not always) you can tell how much I love a series by whether or not I stay current with it. Do I read each new book as it's released? I certainly do with Jess Montgomery's Sheriff Lily Ross historical series set in 1920s Ohio. It's wonderful! When I learned that the fourth book in the series was in the pipeline, you know I did one of my Happy Dances, guaranteed to make the neighbors' cats hide under their beds and to set the neighborhood dogs to barking.

Let me tell you more about The Echoes!

Available March 29, 2022!

Synopsis:

"As July 4, 1928 approaches, Sheriff Lily Ross and her family look forward to the opening of an amusement park in a nearby town, created by Chalmer Fitzpatrick―a veteran and lumber mill owner. When Lily is alerted to the possible drowning of a girl, she goes to investigate, and discovers schisms going back several generations, in an ongoing dispute over the land on which Fitzpatrick has built the park.

Lily's family life is soon rattled, too, with the revelation that before he died, her brother had a daughter, Esme, with a woman in France, and arrangements have been made for Esme to immigrate to the U.S. to live with them. But Esme never makes it to Kinship, and soon Lily discovers that she has been kidnapped. Not only that, but a young woman is indeed found murdered in the fishing pond on Fitzpatrick's property, at the same time that a baby is left on his doorstep.

As the two crimes interweave, Lily must confront the question of what makes family: can we trust those we love? And what do we share, and what do we keep secret?

Sounds like another good one, doesn't it?

I love this series for its stories, its strong characters, and its historical setting. I always learn something when I read one of these books, and I love the questions Montgomery raises about family and community.

Are any of you fans of this series? If so, I know you're just as happy as I am about The Echoes. If you're new to the series, I highly recommend it, and I strongly suggest that you begin with the first book, The Widows. You have some fantastic reading ahead of you!

  1. Yippie. Another book in a series I also love to read. I hope Marvena is in this book, along with Lily. I want to see what changes have occurred since the last book.

And this sounds very interesting. Now to library reserve to see if it's there yet.

I am slogging my way through Tana French's The Wych Elm. Although there is a lot of detail and an ennoying, whining protagonist -- and it's in first-person! -- there are passages of extreme brilliance and wit. So I'm reading it, waiting for those paragraphs. And because it's set in Dublin, there are bits of Irish history tossed in as tidbits. I'm only r eading small sections per day, but that's OK. It's not a page-turner.

    1. Not every book has to be a page-turner, and not being a page-turner doesn't mean that the book is bad.

  3. There's just something about looking forward to a new book in a series you really love, isn't there, Cathy? Combine a strong female lead, a good historical setting and well-crafted mystery plot, and you've got my attention. I'm going to have to catch up with this series!

  5. Add my recommendation for this series too! I'm delighted that a new book will be coming out. And it sounds really good. What I would tell people is that there are 3 books in the series so far. They have until the end of March to get those read and then be ready for this new one, #4. :-)
