A New Addiction Weekly Link Round-Up

I know. I know. I need a new addiction like I need another hole in my head. Books and yarn are expensive enough (especially that box of silk-blend and cashmere yarn that arrived last week...), why on earth would I want a new one?
Well... I didn't exactly want it. I kinda stumbled into it.

Something tells me I'd better quench your curiosity.

Yes, I have fallen prey to cheap, brightly colored reading glasses. And you know it's bad when I start buying cases for the spares. I have left a pair of reading glasses in key places throughout the house. That shelf above the kitchen sink for those tiny-print labels on boxes and cans. In the craft room. By the bed. In the bathroom. With my knitting basket. In my purse. Here at the desk. But I keep finding new colors that I just have to try, hence the case to put the extras in. (Actually, it's two cases. Just in case. Ahem.)

It could be worse. I was like a kid in a candy store when I went to Target to buy a pair of sunglasses off the rack. I'd never ever done that before. But I did make myself stop at two pairs. However, these reading glasses are another story! Back in the day when one lens cost $236 and I needed two pairs of prescription glasses, I had to save up for those things. And I couldn't go Elton John with the frames either. Now I've got "new eyeballs," and I can splurge. And glare doesn't bother me. And I'm no longer blinded by oncoming headlights at night. Just to let you know that I'm still thrilled with the results of all those eye surgeries.

But now I'd better take off my green, yellow, orange, and brown striped readers and put on my mirrored aviators. It's time to mosey on out to the corral. Head 'em up! Mooooooooooooove 'em out!

►Books & Other Interesting Tidbits◄
  • There's no shame in reading whatever books you want-- literary snobs be damned. (This has been my mantra for decades. Is it yours?)
  • Open Road Integrated Media digital publishing is finding a new path.
  • The Little House on the Prairie was built on Native American land. You know... the fault may be within me, but no matter how many critical articles appear about Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, they can't kill how much I loved those books as a child.
  • The business of the romance novel.
  • Shelf policing: how books (and cacti) make women too "spiky" for men. (My advice to men? Grow up!)
  • An elaborate $2.6 million model aircraft carrier has been donated to the Naval Academy. Why am I sharing this? Because my father was a member of the first commissioned crew aboard the full-size original.
  • The profoundly unsettling world of Agatha Christie.
  • The art of book covers (1820-1914).

►Channeling My Inner Indiana Jones◄
  • Archaeologists have discovered an Incan tomb in Peru.
  • Archaeologists dismantled a Maya pyramid in Guatemala and never put it back together.
  • To mark the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt's death, Rijksmuseum is putting all 400 of the master artist's works on view together for the first time. Wow...
  • The wreck of the long-lost World War II aircraft carrier, USS Hornet, has been found after seventy-six years, nearly 17,500 feet under water.
  • These objects from the National Museum of American History begin to tell the story of women's history in America.

►Channeling My Inner Elly Mae Clampett◄
  • What this prehistoric turtle's tumor tells scientists about modern cancer.
  • Feeding mosquitos diet drugs makes them stop biting.
  • The hummingbird as warrior: the evolution of a fierce and furious beak.
  • The crest-tailed mulgara, an "extinct" marsupial, has been found alive in Australia after more than a century. Now, these critters know how to hide!
  • Can fish recognize themselves in the mirror?
  • Insects are dying off at an alarming rate.
  • Malaysia seizes 30 tons of trafficked pangolin parts. Sometimes I feel as though "traditional Chinese medicine" is going to kill off every creature on this planet with the exception of humans.
  • Dolphins seem to use toxic pufferfish to get high.

Have a great weekend, and read something fabulous!

  1. Y'know, Cathy, there are far worse addictions out there than reading glasses (and yours are pretty!). And now, you never have to worry about not having a pair handy when you want it. Just sayin'.... Now, that Incan tomb is calling me...

  2. My husband has had reading glasses all over the place for years. I used to even carry a pair for him in my purse. No longer though. He still wears his contacts (and reading glasses), but he also has regular glasses. He needs the contacts for golf - says that the peripheral vision is needed for that. So, I say - you go, girl. Enjoy your new specs wherever you need them.

I just finished listening to KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON and the Wilder family was mentioned in that book. And we had our mystery group discussion of the A.J. Finn book Wednesday. Lots of author drama these days. I also agree with 'read what you want to'.

    1. Killers of the Flower Moon is one of the best books I've ever read. Thinking about it still makes me mad!

  3. :)
It's good to hear the surgery worked so well to help fuel this new addiction! And I agree with your Little House feelings. They were one of several series I would re-read every summer vacation. My very smart mother let me check out as many books as I could carry--no tote bag, I probably would never have gone outside otherwise! I think I had actually heard the prairie house was on native land, that's why they had to move again. Will have to check out the article for more.

    1. I've made a habit of reading outside since I was little, so no one could tell me I needed sunshine and fresh air! LOL

  4. And you had those wonderful trees to read in.
A city gal, I read in my room with a big tree's branches brushing against my window.
Your eye surgery must be quite successful.

Are the reading glasses just magnifiers or is there still a prescription? A friend got a pair of big red-framed magnifying blasses for $6 online. But no prescription in them. All she needs is a cigarette holder and she'd look about 1955 Eve Arden.

    1. Just magnifiers that you can pick up at any drugstore.
