The Earth Has Shifted on This Weekly Link Round-Up

Perhaps it's because I do spend a block of time outdoors each day during the summer, but I find myself attuned to subtle changes. Denis has shaken his head at me more than once because I don't need a watch to tell the time when I'm sitting out in the pool. Let me take a look around and see how the shadows are falling, and my guesstimated time normally is within ten minutes of real time.

One of the things I had to get used to when moving here from Illinois was the fact that, since Arizona is further south, those long twilights of the Midwest were gone. No sitting outside whacking mosquitoes, watching fireflies blink on and off, and having the sunlight slowly, lingeringly melt away.

In Arizona, sometimes it feels as though the earth adjusts on its axis while I sleep. The change can seem so abrupt that I think I'd be able to hear the soft click when it happens. That's what happened last week. That soft click. When I got in the pool and began swimming around, I realized that the sun wasn't shining from the same angle. It was slightly lower. Summer has decided to leave. The pool water has begun to cool, and my favorite reading spot will put itself to bed until next summer. Pool season is never long enough to suit me, but I certainly appreciate it each time it returns!

Links, links. Who's got the links? Me? Oh yeah... I do, don't I?

It's going to be interesting to see how long it takes Denis to give me The Look when he discovers which photo I used in this post! If you hear insane shrieking, you'll know payback was by tickling.

I hope you found a link or two that tickled your fancy. I'll be back next weekend with a freshly selected batch for your surfing pleasure!

  1. Our summer is starting to fade, but I'm surprised yours is too - I thought it lasted much longer in the southwest.

    1. It does, and it's still in the triple digits. I'm just mourning in advance. :-)

  2. Cathy - That's one thing I so very much miss living where I do: the change of seasons. Yes, there are changes and if you're aware of it you notice them. But it's not those changes you get to see in the Midwest or the East Coast *sigh.* Oh, and thanks for the links :-)

    1. I'm used to the subtle changes here. I'm such a heat lover that I gladly exchanged the fall colors and snow for the brilliant springs here in the desert.

  6. I think we're getting a little bit of late warm summer weather up here, but I can feel that autumn chill first thing in the morning. It's just far hotter in the afternoon than normal (80s and 90s this week - which is warm for Oregon in the Fall). I'm off to check out the links.

    1. As long as it's not too hot for you. High heat coupled with high humidity is awful!

  7. Ahhhh...I LOVE the change of seasons here. I love it that I can feel just a tinge of fall in the early morning as I head into the classroom. BUT, the important question is, How does Dennis listen to audio books and not explode with his head in the water?? How does he keep his ears dry? How does everything remain waterproof?? He is truly amazing. Will he share his secrets or is he like James Bond and will just give me a wry smile?

I love the Saturday links. Even when I scroll back through them after a few weeks away they are still good and keep me in the loop.

Again, you are mighty terrific, you book goddess, you!

    1. He may not share, but I will. He has a waterproof MP3 player that he loads his pool books on! (I wondered if anyone was going to ask....)
