Another piece of art from a facsimile of Rural England, Cottage and Village Life by P.H. Ditchfield, which was originally published in 1912. The wonderful watercolor illustrations are by artist A.R. Quinton.

ReplyDeleteI am lucky enough to live in Somerset, not a million miles away from Dunster, which is a particularly beautiful place.
The scene in your picture hasn't changed a great deal in substance since it was published. Yes traffic can now be seen driving down the road which you see, but the memorial is still there and the pavements on either side of the road are still cobbled.
It boasts a fantastic castle, working water-mill, numerous scrummy tea rooms and some outstanding walks, which take in the many other historic buildings the town plays host to.
It has coastline and a small beach nearby and is one of the county's most visited places.

ReplyDeleteI used to live about five minutes from Dunster and Yvonne is completely correct, it has hardly changed at all apart from the traffic. I think I have a couple of photos... I'll dig them out and pop them on my blog in the next couple of days.
