How do you react to movies made of your favourite books (or even not-so-favourite books)? Do you look forward to seeing them, or avoid them? Do you like to have read the book before seeing the movie?At this stage of my life, having my favorite books turned into movies is something I expect. For as long as there have been movies, the people who make those movies have turned to books to get their stories. I don't avoid seeing the movies; I like seeing how film makers deal with the plot and the characters. If the movie has a director and actors that I like, I look forward to seeing them, although sometimes it's not until the film has come out on DVD.
I used to insist that I read the book before I see the movie, but not anymore. Film makers seldom treat books as material that must be followed to the letter, so what I read is going to be different from what I saw on the silver screen anyway.
I do have to admit, though, that if the book is one that I was only a bit interested in reading, seeing the movie is usually enough for me. So many books, so little time, dontcha know!

Like you, I'm usually curious to see how a film maker will treat the book. I expect them to leave some things out, and I can mostly enjoy the movie seperately from the book.

You read my mind, Cathy! Like you, I used to be adamant about reading a book before seeing the movie translation, and while I still often prefer it that way, it isn't necessary. As you said, there are definitely books out there that I have little to no interest in reading but the movies may appeal to me. Romantic Comedies for example. I enjoy the movie, but really have little interest in reading the books more often than not.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy watching movies and can usually separate the book from the movie in terms of my enjoyment. It's always interesting to see how the book is translated from page to screen, I think.
I've gotten where I'd rather see the movie first.

ReplyDeleteI'm still a little obsessive and would rather read the book first. But I do watch the movie with a grain of salt. I know it won't be just like the book or as good. But at least make it enjoyable in it's own right.
