Musing Mondays-- Bookaholics and Movies

How do you react to movies made of your favourite books (or even not-so-favourite books)? Do you look forward to seeing them, or avoid them? Do you like to have read the book before seeing the movie?

At this stage of my life, having my favorite books turned into movies is something I expect. For as long as there have been movies, the people who make those movies have turned to books to get their stories. I don't avoid seeing the movies; I like seeing how film makers deal with the plot and the characters. If the movie has a director and actors that I like, I look forward to seeing them, although sometimes it's not until the film has come out on DVD.

I used to insist that I read the book before I see the movie, but not anymore. Film makers seldom treat books as material that must be followed to the letter, so what I read is going to be different from what I saw on the silver screen anyway.

I do have to admit, though, that if the book is one that I was only a bit interested in reading, seeing the movie is usually enough for me. So many books, so little time, dontcha know!

  1. Like you, I'm usually curious to see how a film maker will treat the book. I expect them to leave some things out, and I can mostly enjoy the movie seperately from the book.

    Here's my musing...

  2. You read my mind, Cathy! Like you, I used to be adamant about reading a book before seeing the movie translation, and while I still often prefer it that way, it isn't necessary. As you said, there are definitely books out there that I have little to no interest in reading but the movies may appeal to me. Romantic Comedies for example. I enjoy the movie, but really have little interest in reading the books more often than not.

I enjoy watching movies and can usually separate the book from the movie in terms of my enjoyment. It's always interesting to see how the book is translated from page to screen, I think.

  3. I've gotten where I'd rather see the movie first.

  4. There are some books that I'd rather watch the movie (like LOTR).. I agree, the movie version would suffice if its not that interesting :)

  5. I generally like to read the books first, but occassionally read the book because the movie was good and I wanted to know more of the story. my musings

  6. see, I would rather see the movie first and then have the book, which is usually a better experience, to look forward to.

  7. I'm still a little obsessive and would rather read the book first. But I do watch the movie with a grain of salt. I know it won't be just like the book or as good. But at least make it enjoyable in it's own right.

  8. Kathy-- I know I do when it's a book that I'm unsure whether or not I want to read it in the first place. I'm also more realistic: I'm just not going to be able to read ALL the books. :(

Judy-- If I had a choice between the LOTR books or the movies, I'd choose the movies, too! Thanks for stopping by!

Kaye-- That's what happens to me... I see a movie and then read the book because I want to know more.

Caite-- I used to be that way, too. It must have something to do with my advancing years. ;)

Jenny-- Exactly. I forgive Hollywood not following the book closely...just make it a good movie!
