I absolutely love finding new authors! I've been known to put a tried-and-true author back on the shelf in order to buy a book by a new author. Now I make myself go book shopping with a list; otherwise, I'm prone to going crazy. But...I still peek from time to time. In fact, the only time I will willingly put a new author back on the shelf is when I look at the flaps of the dust jacket or on the back and there's absolutely nothing that tells me what the book is about. It's all media blurbs. I hate that! I don't care if my best friend has a blurb on the back of the book, I still want to know what it's about!
My budget has been tightened a great deal, just like everyone else's, which is one of the reasons why I joined Paperback Swap. I'm in hog heaven there because I feel absolutely no restraint when it comes to sampling new authors. If I read a few pages and discover that the book just isn't for me, I post it back into the system. I'm not stuck with it. I have found dozens of new authors through this service.
I really have to join PBS. And once again, our answers are very much alike.
ReplyDeleteI have been embarrassingly conservative but have become better at trying new authors, I think. Blogging & meeting new avid readers certainly inspire me. I hardly ever buy a book by an author I don´t know, though. I usually try them via the library - or buy cheap, used copies via Amazon or other online sellers.
ReplyDeleteI could have answered this one for you!
ReplyDeleteBeth--PBS is one of the best ways to indulge in new authors and not break the bank!
ReplyDeleteDorte--Gone are the days when I used to buy all my books. I simply can't afford it. I've been getting more books from Paperback Swap than I was ever able to buy!
Kathy--I know you could. You've been paying attention to what arrives in my mailbox each week!
I did join PBS awhile ago...I just have never used it.
ReplyDeleteI must say, going book shopping with a list is just so organized!
Caite--I've found PBS the best way for me to keep up with new authors and not get a second mortgage on the house! And going book shopping with a list is just one way that I keep myself focused to avoid the aforementioned second mortgage.
