Tuesday Thingers--Multiple Choice

Marie, The Boston Bibliophile, asks: Work multiples. Do you own multiple copies of any books? Which ones? Why? Can you share your list?

First off, I want to thank Marie for this question because it brought to light a problem that I didn't realize I had. For some strange reason, several of my books were listed as multiples when they are not, so first I had to go through the list and correct entries!

Yes, I do have work multiples. I don't know if the numbers are going to show up against the background of my blog. If they don't, I'm not going to fight that and this headache, too. Here's the (corrected) list of fifteen:

The National Trust Handbook for Members and Visitors 2008 by National Trust (National Trust (2008), Edition: 2008, Paperback, 400 pages)

Two editions of Robert Burns, one paperback for reading and one in a lovely tartan slipcase. Two editions of Jane Eyre because I haven't had the heart to throw away the one that's fallen apart from reading. There are two editions of a couple of collector's handbooks for items that I do collect. I could set the older editions free, I suppose. There's a long string of duplicate Tom Clancy, not because I'm the fan from hell, but because my husband brought his books with him when he immigrated. By looking at a title such as Debt of Honour, it's easier to pick out the UK editions. Two copies of Into the Wilderness because Denis wanted to read it on a trip back to the UK, so I bought him the paperback. Two copies of Les Fleurs du Mal, one in English, one in French. Two copies of Bid Time Return because I wanted a copy with the movie cover. Two copies of Dragonfly in Amber, one in English, one in French. Two copies of Travel Arizona: The Backroads because the photos in the older edition are too gorgeous to turn loose...well, I'll probably rethink that one! Three copies of the National Trust Handbook. I could probably turn loose of all but the newest if I can find someone who doesn't mind highlighting and notes! (I am a member of the National Trust.)

There's also a multiple of a book that doesn't show up. I have six copes of the Bible: a huge family one dating from the 19th century, my grandmother's dating from the 1920s, mine, another huge one called the Rembrandt Edition, a copy in French, and a copy in Spanish. At this point, you've undoubtedly surmised that I can read in a couple of other languages. Sometimes I want the "foreign language" version to pick up differences in translation, sometimes just because I want to see if the sheer beauty of the words shines through no matter the language.

Thanks again, Marie, for uncovering an LT catalog problem I didn't know I had! If you'd like to see more answers to this week's question, click on the Tuesday Thingers logo at the top of this post!

  3. This was a timely question for me, too. I spent some time organizing/cleaning the bookcases this weekend, and got rid of any physical duplicates. I don't have any interesting multiples.

  4. I have some dups. from the interesting to the ridiculous. As I wrote on my blog, when I entered all my books on LT I found that I had three copies of the same cheap paperback edition of Edith Hamilton's Mythology...odd.
