A Season to Lie by Emily Littlejohn

First Line: On a cold and bitter night in February, twelve weeks after giving birth, I returned to what I knew best: death.

It's just what new mother Gemma Monroe needs on her first day back on the job: there's a blizzard howling outside and the station has received a report of a prowler at Valley Academy. She and her partner, Finn, think it's a prank, but when they do a check of the school property, Gemma discovers a grisly scene out in the snow. The dead man's true identity was meant to be kept a secret, but no one at the Cedar Valley Police Department knows how long that will last. Besides, that's the least of their worries because an ominous note was left with the body promising more deaths to come.

Like the first book in the Gemma Monroe series, author Emily Littlejohn proves in A Season to Lie that she can create a premise for a mystery that will keep readers turning the pages. Unfortunately, the story as a whole fell a bit flat for me, and there were two main reasons for this.

One was Gemma's personal life. She's a brand-new mother who's finally come to terms with the fact that she is and that she enjoys being a mother. But somewhere between having to stop and use a breast pump every couple of hours and her partner whining about being stuck at home with a baby, I just wanted her to forget she had a personal life and concentrate on the investigation. Which leads to the second problem.

Gemma's investigation of the death of a famous man who was incognito there in Cedar Valley really had my interest until I deduced the identity of the killer by the description of the character and how everyone reacted to the person. From there on in, my interest deflated like a slow leak in a snow tire. I don't like it when this happens because it's not always a sign of my superior deductive skills. Sometimes it's simply a matter of my suspicious nature.

But by all means, your mileage can certainly vary, so don't be hesitant about giving A Season to Lie a try-- especially if you've read the first book in the series.

It's 1986. Undersheriff Bill Gastner is enjoying his usual insomnia alone inside his old adobe when jolted by a horrendous noise. Dreading what he will find, he hastens to the nearby interstate exit where a violent crash has occurred. Not only is the vehicle that struck the support pillars totaled and the driver and a passenger crushed inside, a dead boy has been ejected.

As the appalled Gastner recognizes the youth and swings into action, the first deputy to join him at the scene is rookie Robert Torrez, the department's newest hire. Before Gastner can head him off, Torrez sees that the boy is his spirited younger brother. And the girl crushed inside the SUV is a younger sister. The driver of the Suburban, also dead, is the assistant District Attorney's teenaged son. Two local family tragedies.

A shaken couple reports that when the Suburban, careening at nearly 100 miles an hour, passed them on the interstate, activity inside hinted at its occupants' panic. Were the three dead kids running from someone-or something-rather than speeding? Further investigation reveals that a fourth teen should have been in the vehicle, but is now missing. Where had the four kids been? And why? It appears they'd lied to their parents.

Following his usual meticulous procedure, Gastner traces the vehicle's path to a remote canyon with attractive caves. The discovery he makes there balloons the case and introduces possible murder. Yet with a lack of witnesses hampering Sheriff Salcido, Gastner, Torrez, and other deputies, errors working the case can too easily be made

"

Best covers in my humble opinion? Heaven's Crooked Finger, A Season to Lie, and The Plot Is Murder. My particular fondness for The Plot Is Murder is due to the fact that, for over sixteen years, my best buddy was a black toy poodle, and I know how loving and how intelligent those dogs are.

It was sad to see that this will be the last book in the Inspector Irene Huss series, but one thing is for certain: there will never be a shortage of good books to read. Speaking of which, did any of my chosen titles make it to your own wish lists? Which ones? Inquiring minds would love to know!

Inherit the Bones by Emily Littlejohn

First Line: In my dreams, the dead can speak.

Cedar Valley, Colorado is filled with hikers and campers in the summer and skiers and snowboarders in the winter, but beneath the beautiful scenery that surrounds the residents lie some pretty gruesome secrets.

Almost forty years ago, two little boys disappeared without a trace until Detective Gemma Monroe uncovered their bones a few years back. Their murders remain unsolved, attributed to a ghostly monster locals call the Woodsman. Now a young man has been murdered in a seedy little traveling circus, and as Gemma tries to find justice for the victim, she's going to uncover secrets that will shake this Colorado community to its foundations.

This is a debut novel that doesn't read like one. Emily Littlejohn has a beautiful, lyrical writing style that captivated me from beginning to end. She's also created a nuanced main character that I definitely want to read more about. Gemma Monroe's parents were killed in a car wreck, and she was raised by her grandmother who is now in the grip of dementia. Gemma is pregnant, and her partner is off in the wilds of Alaska on a geological survey. Their relationship is complicated; Brody is a man Gemma loves deeply, and she trusts him with her life-- she just doesn't trust him with her heart. So she's got all sorts of personal troubles compounded by being forced to work with a fellow officer whose ethics have been questionable on more than one occasion.

Inherit the Bones has a fascinating premise that kept its hooks in me throughout the book, but it's one you can't really talk about for fear of giving things away. Whodunit was easily deduced by me this time around, but with the character of Gemma, the storyline, and the way Emily Littlejohn writes, I didn't care. I'm looking forward to more.

November 2016 New Mystery Releases!

Sometimes it seems to be feast or famine around here when it comes to the topic of books. Last month, I had advance reading copies of over half of my picks. This month, I only have one. I'm only mentioning this because of the high turnaround from one month to the next; it's definitely not a complaint! Which reminds me of the way some book bloggers behave when they're around those advance reading copies, but that has nothing to do with any of you and most certainly not anything to do with the subject of this post.

The following books are my picks of the new crime fiction being released during the month of November. I have them grouped by release date, and I've included all the information you'll need to find them at all your favorite book spots. Book synopses are courtesy of Amazon. Happy Reading!

With all of the heart-pounding excitement that made her internationally bestselling Alexandra Cooper series a hit, Linda Fairstein paves the way for another unstoppable heroine . . . even if she is only twelve.

Title: Ruler of the Night
Author: David Morrell
Series: #3 in the Thomas De Quincey historical trilogy set in Victorian London
ISBN: 9780316307901
Publisher: Mulholland Books
Hardcover, 352 pages

Synopsis: "1855. The railway has irrevocably altered English society, effectively changing geography and fueling the industrial revolution by shortening distances between cities: a whole day's journey can now be covered in a matter of hours. People marvel at their new freedom.

But train travel brings new dangers as well, with England's first death by train recorded on the very first day of railway operations in 1830. Twenty-five years later, England's first train murder occurs, paralyzing London with the unthinkable when a gentleman is stabbed to death in a safely locked first-class passenger compartment.

In the next compartment, the brilliant opium-eater Thomas De Quincey and his quick-witted daughter, Emily, discover the homicide in a most gruesome manner. Key witnesses and also resourceful sleuths, they join forces with their allies in Scotland Yard, Detective Ryan and his partner-in-training, Becker, to pursue the killer back into the fogbound streets of London, where other baffling murders occur. Ultimately, De Quincey must confront two ruthless adversaries: this terrifying enemy, and his own opium addiction which endangers his life and his tormented soul.

Ruler of the Night is a riveting blend of fact and fiction which, like master storyteller David Morrell's previous De Quincey novels, 'evokes Victorian London with such finesse that you'll hear the hooves clattering on cobblestones, the racket of dustmen, and the shrill calls of vendors' (Entertainment Weekly)

There are certainly some good ones becoming available in November! I have to admit that I'm most looking forward to David Morrell's Ruler of the Night-- I've been enjoying his Thomas De Quincey mysteries so much!

And as far as book covers go, I think the cover for Camilleri's A Voice in the Night is heartbreaking.

What do you think of my lineup? Did any of my picks find their way to your own wish list? Which ones? Inquiring minds would love to know!
