July 2017 New Mystery Releases!

The one time of year that always goes too fast for my liking is summer. I've always been this way, probably because I suffer from SAD, and the brilliant sunlight and lack of clouds here in the desert go a long way to unburden me of that tiresome disorder.

With my enjoyment of my pool, wildlife watching, and reading, I can go through about seventy-five books over the summer, and that means that I have to keep my eyes peeled for new books constantly, greedy soul that I am.

The following are my picks of the new crime fiction being released during the month of July. They are grouped by release date and contain information that will help you add them to your Must Read lists. Book covers and synopses are courtesy of Amazon.

Let's get started!

But Oswald has secrets. He is running away from something in England―a shadow that still haunts him, no matter how much he consoles himself with the delights of Venice. When he finds a dead man at the carnival, he is dragged into a murder investigation that draws him deep into the intrigues of this paranoid, mysterious city.

From the dungeons of the Doge’s Palace to the convent-brothel of Santa Lucia, Oswald must search for a murderer in this bewildering maze of alleys and canals. When he comes up against the feared Signori di Notte, the secret police, Oswald learns that he is not the only one with something to hide. Title: Collared
Series: #16 in the Andy Carpenter series set in Paterson, New Jersey.
336 pages

Synopsis: "Lawyer Andy Carpenter’s true passion is the Tara Foundation, the dog rescue organization he runs with his friend Willie Miller. But they are quite surprised when they scan the dog’s embedded chip and discover that they know this dog. He is the 'DNA dog.'

Two and a half years ago, Jill Hickman was a single mother of an adopted baby. Her baby and dog were kidnapped in broad daylight in Eastside Park, and they haven’t been seen since. A tip came in that ID’d a former boyfriend of Hickman’s, Keith Wachtel, as the kidnapper. A search of his house showed no sign of the child but did uncover more incriminating evidence, and the clincher that generated Wachtel’s arrest was some dog hair, notable since Wachtel did not have a dog. DNA tests showed conclusively that the hair belonged to Hickman’s dog. Wachtel was convicted of kidnapping, but the dog and baby were never found.

Now, with the reappearance of the dog, the case is brought back to light, and the search for the child renewed. Goaded by his wife’s desire to help a friend and fellow mother and Andy’s desire to make sure the real kidnapper is in jail, Andy and his team enter the case. But what they start to uncover is far more complicated and dangerous than they ever expected.

The murder investigation provides more questions than answers, as a tangled mess of secrets slowly comes to light. From street gangs to secret societies, from big-game hunting to the illegal animal trade, from New York City zoos to the highest offices in city government, Alex has her work cut out for her—especially since the task force handling the investigation, led by the US Attorney, seems to be more against her than with her. As tensions rise between Alex and the feds, she must determine just how far she is willing to go to uncover the truth—and uphold the integrity of the office she has so proudly served.

Great lineup for July, isn't it? I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the newest S.D. Sykes mystery, and Michael Connelly's latest has really caught my eye, too. What about you? Which books made it to your own wishlists? Inquiring minds would love to know!

Into the Lion's Den by Linda Fairstein

First Line: "I'm trapped!" Liza said.

Devlin Quick is attending summer school and has a new friend, Liza from Argentina. When at the New York Public Library, Liza is certain that she saw someone steal a page from a rare book. Devlin-- twelve-year-old daughter of the first woman police commissioner in New York City-- wants the man brought to justice, even if it means enlisting the help of another friend, Booker, and racing around the city collecting evidence. She's more than persistent enough to get the job done.

This book, written for the eight to twelve age bracket, is a fun read for adults, too. I enjoyed the tours of the New York Public Library and One Police Plaza, and I learned quite a bit about the rare map trade as well.

Although the characters in Into the Lion's Den all seem a bit too good to be true, I had to remind myself that I wasn't reading my usual fare. Devlin is smart and resourceful-- a born detective-- and her grandmother Louella "Lu" Atwell is my favorite adult.

This is a fun, fast-paced, intriguing read for children, and it makes a nice change of pace for adults, too. How about some quality reading time together?

Final Jeopardy by Linda Fairstein

First Line: I sat on my living room sofa at five o'clock in the morning with a copy of the mock-up of the front page of the day's New York Post in my hand, looking at my own obituary.

What Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cooper soon learns is that the dead woman is actually Hollywood star Isabella Lascar, who was staying at Alex's retreat in Martha's Vineyard. The one main fact that must be learned as quickly as possible is the identity of the intended victim. Was Alex Cooper, Manhattan's top sex crimes prosecutor, the assassin's target, or was the high-profile actress? As the investigation gathers steam, Alex's life could very well hang in the balance.

After seeing Linda Fairstein at a local author event, I decided that I really needed to read one of her mysteries. I began with the very first book, and I'll be reading more.

Fairstein describes Martha's Vineyard beautifully, and really gives readers a wonderful feel for the daily life of a high-powered assistant district attorney. She also does an excellent job of showing how laws governing sex crimes have changed over the years-- something she should be capable of since she was the head of the Manhattan Sex Crimes Unit for over two decades.

I really enjoyed the book. It's fast-paced, and the non-cooking Alex Cooper is a strong, fascinating character who has a strong circle of friends. However, Final Jeopardy does have a couple of first-timer hiccups. The dialogue is often a bit stiff and stilted, and when a bad guy is about to be exposed a few pages down the road, Fairstein shines a beacon on the clue she planted. But guess what? I don't care. Those things are easily fixed. The characters, story, and setting are first-rate. I'm looking forward to more Alex Cooper!

November 2016 New Mystery Releases!

Sometimes it seems to be feast or famine around here when it comes to the topic of books. Last month, I had advance reading copies of over half of my picks. This month, I only have one. I'm only mentioning this because of the high turnaround from one month to the next; it's definitely not a complaint! Which reminds me of the way some book bloggers behave when they're around those advance reading copies, but that has nothing to do with any of you and most certainly not anything to do with the subject of this post.

The following books are my picks of the new crime fiction being released during the month of November. I have them grouped by release date, and I've included all the information you'll need to find them at all your favorite book spots. Book synopses are courtesy of Amazon. Happy Reading!

Title: Ruler of the Night

ISBN: 9780316307901
Publisher: Mulholland Books
Hardcover, 352 pages

Synopsis: "1855. The railway has irrevocably altered English society, effectively changing geography and fueling the industrial revolution by shortening distances between cities: a whole day's journey can now be covered in a matter of hours. People marvel at their new freedom.

But train travel brings new dangers as well, with England's first death by train recorded on the very first day of railway operations in 1830. Twenty-five years later, England's first train murder occurs, paralyzing London with the unthinkable when a gentleman is stabbed to death in a safely locked first-class passenger compartment.

In the next compartment, the brilliant opium-eater Thomas De Quincey and his quick-witted daughter, Emily, discover the homicide in a most gruesome manner. Key witnesses and also resourceful sleuths, they join forces with their allies in Scotland Yard, Detective Ryan and his partner-in-training, Becker, to pursue the killer back into the fogbound streets of London, where other baffling murders occur. Ultimately, De Quincey must confront two ruthless adversaries: this terrifying enemy, and his own opium addiction which endangers his life and his tormented soul.

Ruler of the Night is a riveting blend of fact and fiction which, like master storyteller David Morrell's previous De Quincey novels, 'evokes Victorian London with such finesse that you'll hear the hooves clattering on cobblestones, the racket of dustmen, and the shrill calls of vendors' (Entertainment Weekly)

But even as the duo are hailed as heroes, a mad bomber remains at large, striking terror across the Eastern seaboard in a ruthless pursuit of retribution. As more bombs are detonated and the body count escalates, Meg and Hawk are brought in to a task force dedicated to stopping the unseen killer. But when the attacks spiral wide and any number of locations could be the next target, it will come down to a battle of wits and survival skills between Meg, Hawk, and the bomber they’re tracking to rescue a nation from the brink of chaos.

There are certainly some good ones becoming available in November! I have to admit that I'm most looking forward to David Morrell's Ruler of the Night-- I've been enjoying his Thomas De Quincey mysteries so much!

And as far as book covers go, I think the cover for Camilleri's A Voice in the Night is heartbreaking.

What do you think of my lineup? Did any of my picks find their way to your own wish list? Which ones? Inquiring minds would love to know!
