Deadlight by Graham Hurley

First Line: All the training, all the waiting, all the unvoiced speculation: what it might feel like, how you might cope.

In this fourth book in this police procedural series set in Portsmouth, England, Joe Faraday has recently been promoted to the elite Major Crimes team. Not only has he been promoted, he's been tossed in at the deep end. Prison guard Paul Coughlin has been murdered, and Faraday learns that the suspect list is a long one. The only ones putting in a good word for Coughlin are his superiors at the prison. The suspect list lengthens further when it is discovered that Coughlin was an ex-petty officer in the Royal Navy who served aboard the HMS Accolade which was sunk during the Falklands war. Yes, it's one of those cases that calls for sheer persistence and determined fact finding-- but will Faraday's superior in Major Crimes have the necessary patience?

This is one of my favorite British police procedural series. Faraday is a determined investigator who demands truth and justice. As a widower, he hasn't had an easy time of raising his deaf son by himself, but he's done a good job-- even though both his job and his son have had him hiking out to commune with the birds he loves so much. (Some detectives hit the bottle, others listen to jazz or opera, Faraday goes bird watching.) Joe's son is pretty much independent at this stage and even helps during the investigation. I've enjoyed watching him grow up during this series.

The case is an absolute beast of a maze. Coughlin went out of his way to be hated, and his decades of practice stood him in good stead. Faraday has his hands full weeding through all the suspects, and his efforts at piecing together the dead man's history are hampered by a brick wall called the Royal Navy. I found the entire plot thread of the Falklands war to be very interesting, and Hurley uses it to give readers a slight advantage that Faraday does not have.  (It doesn't mean that we get to the resolution any quicker however.)

As usual, the Portsmouth setting is superb from its wildlife habitats to the mean city streets. Hurley seems to be a writer that's not all that well known outside of the UK. It's a pity because his books are excellent, but that lack of "world renown" also makes me feel as though I'm getting an insider's look at his patch of England. His books aren't polished up or toned down for international audiences. It's an insider's look that I appreciate and keep coming back to for more.

November 2013 New Mystery Releases!

It's downright impossible for me to believe that it's almost time for the holidays! It won't be much longer before I'll be posting about the new Christmas-themed mysteries that will be available. (Well, some of them already are, but I'm not ready for them yet!) And if I'm doing that, then I'll be getting all my decorations out of storage, too.

I'm not ready, I tell you!

One thing that I am ready to do is to show you my picks for the new mysteries being released during the month of November. I've grouped them by release date, and of course I've included all the information you need to find them at all your favorite book spots. Synopses are courtesy of Amazon.

Enjoy the fall, enjoy your family, but most of all-- Enjoy a good book!

Title: Deadly Pleasures
Standalone anthology of short stories
ISBN: 9780727883179
Publisher: Severn House
Hardcover, 256 pages

Synopsis: "The Crime Writers' Association marks its Diamond Jubilee year with an anthology that's a smorgasbord of delicacies including a few pungent unfamiliar items just begging to be tasted. Among the 18 contributors are such well-known authors as Ann Cleeves, whose The Pirate offers a surprise twist; Peter Robinson, whose Enchantress mixes legend with mystery; and Lindsey Davis, whose whimsical Zounds! features a ghostly cast. Christopher Fowler's Bryant and May in the Field shows the Peculiar Crimes Unit in its best light, with its trademark blend of logic and whimsy. The spare scenery of Iceland in Michael Ridpath's The Polar Bear Killing is matched by his sharp clear prose. The late Margaret Yorke's Threescore and Ten, the volume's only reprint, tugs at the heartstrings before justice arrives in an unusual way."

Title: Purgatory
Author: Ken Bruen
Series: #10 in the Jack Taylor series set in Galway, Ireland
ISBN:  9780802126078
Publisher: Mysterious Press
Hardcover, 272 pages

Synopsis: "Recovering from the severe mental and physical wounds inflicted from his recent past, former cop Jack Taylor has finally found a modicum of peace. He has managed to kick the myriad substances that have had a stranglehold over his painful life, however tenuously. Yet this fragile existence is threatened when a vigilante killer begins targeting the scum of Galway, signing mysterious notes with the moniker 'C 33'. The killer addresses these cryptic letters to Jack, trying to goad him into joining the murderous spree.

While Jack tries to unravel the mystery and motives of this demented killer, he is also brought into the fold of an enigmatic tech billionaire who has been buying up massive amounts of property in Galway, seemingly in the hopes of offering this downtrodden city a better future. Yet if Jack has learned one thing living in Ireland, it's that people who outwardly claim to be on the side of righteousness are likely harboring far more nefarious motives beneath the surface.

With the help of his friends, former drug dealer-turned-zen master Stewart and dogged police sergeant Ridge, Jack is determined to track down C 33, even if it jeopardizes his livelihood, his friends, and the remaining shreds of his sanity. C 33 is Bruen at his best: lyrical, brutal, and ceaselessly suspenseful.

Biology graduate Anna Bella Nor is just two weeks away from defending her thesis at Copenhagen University on the origin of birds when her supervisor Lars Helland is found dead in his office, his severed tongue lying on his bloodied shirtfront, a copy of her thesis lying in his lap. Helland has been deliberately infected with a rare parasite that only an expert in the field would have access to

Police Superintendent Søren Marhauge is assigned to unravel what appears to be a series of related intrigues in the Biology Department. When Anna Bella’s fellow graduate and close friend is also killed, the murders seem to be linked not only to the university but also to Anna herself. As Marhauge investigates he must enter the imbroglio of the university—the bitter competition and scores to be settled among colleagues vying for the same scarce grants and promotions—and learn the dark secrets of this seemingly tame corner of academia.

Natasha Doroshenko, a Ukrainian woman who has been convicted of the attempted murder of her Danish fiancé, escapes police custody on her way to an interrogation in Copenhagen's police headquarters. That night, the frozen, tortured body of Michael, the ex-fiancé, is found in a car, and the manhunt for Natasha escalates. It isn't the first time the young Ukrainian woman has lost a partner to violent ends: her first husband was also murdered, three years earlier in Kiev, and in the same manner: tortured to death in a car.

Danish Red Cross nurse Nina Borg has been following Natasha's case for several years now, since Natasha first took refuge at a crisis center where Nina works. Nina, who had tried to help Natasha leave her abusive fiancé more than once, just can't see the young Ukrainian mother as a vicious killer. But in her effort to protect Natasha's daughter and discover the truth, Nina realizes there is much she didn't know about this woman and her past. The mystery has long and bloody roots, going back to a terrible famine that devastated Stalinist Ukraine in 1934, when a ten-year-old girl with the voice of a nightingale sang her family into shallow graves.

Title: Through the Evil Days

ISBN: 9780312606848
Publisher: Minotaur Books
Hardcover, 368 pages

On a frigid January night, Chief of Police Russ Van Alstyne and Reverend Clare Fergusson are called to the scene of a raging fire. The extent of the tragedy isn't known until the next day, when the charred remains of a man and woman are recovered—along with evidence showing they were shot execution style.

The last thing Russ needs are two potential homicides. He's struggling with the prospect of impending fatherhood, and his new wife is not at all happy with his proposal for their long-delayed honeymoon: a week ice-fishing at a remote Adirondack lake.

St. Alban's Church is still in turmoil over the Reverend Clare Fergusson's news that she's five and a half months pregnant—but only two and a half months married. Worried her post-deployment drinking and drug use may have damaged the baby, she awaits the outcome of the bishop's investigation into her "unpriestly" behavior: a scolding, censure, or permanent suspension.

Officer Hadley Knox is having a miserable January as well. Her on-again, off-again lover, Kevin Flynn, has seven days to weigh an offer from the Syracuse Police Department that might take him half a state away. And her ex-husband's in town—threatening to take custody of their kids unless Hadley pays him off with money she doesn't have.

When Hadley discovers that the dead couple fostered an eight-year-old girl who was a recent liver donee, the search for the killer takes on a new and terrible urgency. With no access to immunosuppressant drugs, transplant rejection will kill the girl in a matter of days.

As a deadly ice storm downs power lines and immobilizes roads, Russ and Clare search desperately for the truth about the missing child, but the hunters will become the hunted when they are trapped in the cabin beside the frozen lake and stalked through the snowbound woods by a killer."

A little something for everyone this month, isn't there?  Some of the books I chose remind me that I'm woefully behind in reading the authors' books. Two of the books I've listed I'll be buying at The Poisoned Pen and having them signed by their authors. Which ones am I looking forward to the most? Ouch-- quit twisting my arm! Okay... okay... I have to admit that I'm looking forward to The Magus of Hay and Through the Evil Days a smidge or two more than the others.

How about you? Which books tickle your fancy???

December 2012 New Mystery Releases!

I've been busier than a one-armed paperhanger with the hives lately. I've been stitching up a storm (needlepoint window valances, anyone?) and decorating eleven Christmas trees (only have one left to do)-- and I haven't even begun to get the rest of the holiday decorations out. This substantially cuts into my book time, but you know that I have to share the new ones that are coming in December!

I've grouped them according to release dates, and all the information is there for you to be able to find them at all of your favorite book spots. Synopses are courtesy of Amazon. Happy Holidays and Happy Reading, everyone!

First Line: For months afterwards, awake and asleep, Faraday dwelt on that final second and a half.

D.I. Joe Faraday is investigating the death of Helen Bassam, a fourteen-year-old girl who fell to her death from a Portsmouth tower block. When the body of a drug dealer is found hanging from a tree, the head of the Major Crimes Squad pulls in all the manpower he can get his hands on, and Faraday is scrambling to hang onto what little he's got.

The case sends Faraday directly into Portsmouth's bleak underworld of wrecked families and children cast adrift. On the trail of a ten-year-old boy who may hold the key piece of evidence in Helen's death, Faraday finds himself in the middle of a crisis much closer to home.

Graham Hurley is one of the best writers of police procedurals in the world today. He brings "Pompey" (Portsmouth, England) to life from the industrial sector to the enclaves of the rich, from the slums to a wide variety of non-human wildlife.

Joe Faraday is a single father whose deaf son has been a challenge to raise. To de-stress from fatherhood and crime, he goes for long walks to watch birds. (Every good copper has to have at least one thing to help him cope, eh?) But Faraday and the reader is never far away from the crime, and in this case-- which deals so closely with broken homes and children living on the streets-- the crime is often heartbreaking.

Hurley's series is one of my favorites, not just for the strong plots, but for the strong sense of place and a cast of multi-faceted, evolving characters. One of these days I'm going to get my ex-Royal Navy husband (who was stationed in Portsmouth) to read one of these Joe Faraday novels. Something tells me he's going to enjoy them as much as I do.

REVIEW: The Take

Title: The Take
Author: Graham Hurley
ISBN: 0752848070/Orion/387 pages
Protagonist: Detective Inspector Joe Faraday
Setting: present-day Portsmouth, England
Series: #2
Rating: A-

First Line: Another grey summer's day, spitting with rain.

DI Joe Faraday has come to terms with his deaf son growing up and moving to France to work and to live with a French woman. Joe's taking French lessons so he'll be able to converse with Valerie, and the lessons even seem to be improving his own social life. But while his personal life improves, it's the end of a grim week for the Portsmouth CID squad. One of Faraday's colleagues is killed in a head-on car crash; DC Paul Winter has been poleaxed with his own terrible news; a disgraced gynecologist is missing, and his caseload of maimed women is a suspect list from hell. To top it all off, Faraday's boss has his eye on bigger and better things and insists that Faraday lend a helping hand. It all reminds me of a t-shirt I once gave to a friend: "Some mornings, it's not worth chewing through the restraints."

I enjoyed the first book in the series, Turnstone, and The Take is even better. As a police procedural it's strong, giving the reader an excellent idea of the inner workings of a police station and the personal dynamics between various officers and departments. All the plot elements are intriguing, from the personal lives of Faraday and Winter, to the investigation of the colleague killed in the head-on collision, to the hunt for the gynecologist. The setting of Portsmouth is excellent, and I could easily picture it in my mind. (Google Earth can give you a marvelous view, too. If you've got it, type in "Portsmouth Harbour UK" and have a good look around!)

Hurley's characterizations are what puts this series a step above so many others. I enjoyed watching Faraday's mind work--not only on his caseload, but on his personal life as it took an unexpected lively turn. Having been a widower who concentrated on raising a deaf son, he's used to having no real social life. DC Paul Winter is another character who really stands out in the books. The only time the man is ever honest is when he's forced to be, and even then you can't really believe him. Those two characters alone are an excellent study in contrast.

If you're in the mood to start a new mystery series, you certainly can't go wrong with Graham Hurley!
