First Line: (from "Weapon of Choice") He would never tire of watching her sleep.

Four interconnected stories trace the journey of  a cursed and priceless watch from 1733 to 1944. From Italy to Scotland to England, the watch touches each of its owners with misfortune. 

Readers first see the watch, called La Sirène by its French pirate owner, in Susanna Kearsley's "Weapon of Choice," my pick of the stories. The travels continue in 1831's Edinburgh in Anna Lee Huber's "In a Fevered Hour" then Christine Trent's "A Pocketful of Death" finds readers in the streets of London during a series of chilling murders. The anthology ends with C.S. Harris's "Siren's Call" in 1944.

The owners were told what needed to be done in order to break the curse, but you know what happens when someone possesses something rare, priceless, and beautiful. From the description of the timepiece, I would have had a difficult time parting with it myself.

I enjoyed seeing how these four authors took an idea and ran with it. The only thing I didn't particularly care for was the acknowledgments at the end of each story. They were repetitive and really intruded on the flow of the narrative. It would have been much better if they'd all been relegated to the end of the book.

It's a good thing I took another look at my post title. It originally said "March 2918 New Mystery Releases." Some of you might have seen that and thought someone spiked my punch bowl-- or wondered about my wonderful contacts who could tell me about books being written nine hundred years from now!

I'm always on the hunt for new mysteries to read, and these are my picks of new crime fiction being released throughout the month of March. I've grouped them by release dates and hopefully given you enough information so that you will succumb to temptation and add them to your wishlists. Book synopses are courtesy of Amazon.

Well, this list has a little something for everyone, doesn't it? My vote for the creepiest book cover this month is Caro Ramsay's The Suffering of Strangers. My favorite? It's a tie between Winspear's To Die but Once and Ehrhart's Murder, She Knit--although that cat looks like a twin of the cat in Betty Hechtman's knitting series! (Or... at least I think it's a cat. It's got a mighty long nose.)

This Side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber

First Line: They say when you believe you're about to die your entire life passes before your eyes in a flurry of poignant images, but all I could think of, rather absurdly, was that I should have worn the blue hat.

When Verity Kent receives an invitation to the engagement party of one of her deceased husband's friends, she almost doesn't accept. Only the cryptic letter she receives changes her mind. The writer suggests that Sidney Kent may have committed treason before his death during the final months of World War I, which would be laughable if not for the fact that the person also knows that Verity's war work was for the Secret Service. This engagement party being held on an island off the southern coast of England is gathering together all of her husband Sidney's surviving friends. It's Verity's best chance of learning the truth. She just hopes against hope that the truth she learns isn't that she never really knew her husband at all.

Modeled after Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, Anna Lee Huber's This Side of Murder gives a pitch perfect portrayal of life in England immediately following the First World War. Once I began reading and took note of the similarities between the two books, I thought to myself, "If [a certain something] happens, I'm out of here." It didn't because Huber's book is not a slavish copy of Christie's. 

First off, let me just say that I want Verity Kent's Pierce-Arrow. I love those cars! Huber's main character is an interesting one. Like the women of Bletchley Park, Kent had to sign the Official Secrets Act. She cannot speak of what she did during the war. The death of her husband hit her quite hard, and she's felt at loose ends for well over a year. She's tried going to lots of parties, drinking to excess, casual flirtations (antidotes that thousands of others tried throughout the Roaring Twenties), but nothing seems to work. Trying to learn the truth about Sidney seems to be the catalyst that's going to pull her back from the brink. 

I like the fact that Verity isn't the female version of Dudley Do-Right. She knows more than most women about the horrors of war, and she's suffered loss, too. But she hasn't exactly kept a stiff upper lip and become married to her widow's weeds. She wants to feel better. She wants to get on with her life. She's just not quite certain of how to go about it. This frailty bodes well for the series. Speaking of the series, the pace is slow for This Side of Murder, but that's mostly due to Huber's setting up her cast of characters and future books. The plot of this book has quite a few twists and turns-- as it should when one keeps in mind the book it's modeled after-- so it's best not to speak of it to avoid giving anything away. 

All in all, if I can't have Verity's spiffing Pierce-Arrow, I can have the next best thing: the second book in the series, please!

I've already been bemoaning the fact that summer is almost over, so I'll do one of the best things I can do to take my mind off that unwelcome fact: talk books.

Those of you who've been following me for a while know that I've had a largely unsuccessful time reading Agatha Christie (or any Golden Age mystery writer), but it's not for lack of trying. Well, I think I've finally cracked Agatha Christie. I just can't get into her full-length novels, but I've been enjoying a selection of her Miss Marple short stories. I knew I'd find a way in!

Now it's time to stop patting myself on the back and begin sharing my picks of the new crime fiction being released throughout the month of September. I've listed them according to release date, and book synopses are courtesy of Amazon. Let's get started!

Title: The Countess of Prague

Author: Stephen Weeks

This month's selection is certainly stellar. I've been waiting impatiently to get my hands on Craig Johnson's The Western Star ever since I heard him talk about it during one of his Poisoned Pen appearances. 

Before I go, I'd like to talk covers for a minute or two. Which covers stand out the most to you? For me, it's Death Distilled and Murderous Mistral, with A Casualty of War coming in as the saddest.

July 2016 New Mystery Releases!

I hope you're all having a wonderful summer; I know I am! First it was that great visit from our niece Daisy, and now I'm in full Summer Mode. What's full Summer Mode? Getting everything done before 2 PM which is when I take my "bucket" of iced green tea and my books out to the pool to sit and read in the cool and the shade until 6 or 7 PM. I know... the life of Riley (and I know how blessed I am)!
