I've gotten away from cover comparisons the past few months, and since this particular book became my latest addition to my Best Reads of 2024, I thought I'd take a look at the UK and US covers for it...
I think this is the first time that neither cover has really "floated my boat." But, if I had to choose-- and that's what this post is all about-- I'd choose the UK cover.
As far as I'm concerned, the US cover is bland and would fade right into the background. There's nothing in particular to catch your eye as you're browsing in the library or bookstore.
On the other hand, the colors on the UK cover help it pop, and the blood-red "carpet" leading to the entrance of the old sanatorium does give it a creepy air. So... I give the UK cover a slight advantage.
What about you? Which cover do you prefer? UK? US? Neither one? Inquiring minds would love to know!
Think the British cover is too busy and doesn't convey anything sinister. The U.S. cover, although simple, does convey murder in that graphic.
ReplyDeleteIt does do that.
DeleteI know what you mean, Cathy, about a cover that doesn't really pop and get your attention. And the UK cover certainly does have some life. I think I like that one better, but not by much, actually.
ReplyDeleteBoth of them are meh, aren't they? If I didn't know how good this author is, I'd walk right on by!
DeleteLike you, I'm not really crazy about either of these covers, but I do find the U.S. version to be more appealing, more serious...
ReplyDeleteYes, it does look more serious.
DeleteThe US cover is weird. The UK cover is better, but not my favorite either. But this is a book I look forward to reading. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's really good, Lark!
DeleteI agree that both covers are meh, at best, and also give the UK cover the edge. But it could definitely do without the blurb at the bottom, which seems to raise a question about the author rather than praising him.
ReplyDeleteIt does, doesn't it? LOL
