Enjoy Reading Outside!

Found Image

This week's outdoor reading spot brings back many fond memories of the swing on my grandparents' screened porch. When I wasn't doing chores or working in the library or out in the swimming pool, I could be found on the porch swing, rocking back and forth to create that comforting creak of the chains as I turned page after page of my latest book.

There are plenty of flowers on this porch, but the one in my memory had beautiful purple clematis planted by my green-fingered grandmother at each end, which helped cool and provide shade for anyone relaxing there. Even after my grandparents had air conditioning installed, that porch was a favorite hangout. So many books read, so many conversations, so much laughter...

Are any of you as fond of porch swings as I am?

  1. That's an absolutely beautiful photo, Cathy. And I can well imagine you enjoyed the swing on your grandparents' porch. You paint lovely picture of it with your description, and I'm sure you have happy memories of it.

  3. Ohmigosh. This is dangerous. This is a perfect setting for reading, napping, viewing nature, having calm solitude. You are lucky you had a porch swing like this one to spend summer days on with books. I only wish I had that experience. I would have never moved, would have had to be pried away from it. Would have read, eaten, slept out there and listened to the birds. Love it.

    1. I slept out there more than once-- and I'm talking about at night when I could rock and listen to the crickets chirping.

    2. Wonderful. I would crawl out onto the brick terrace off my bedroomi in Chicago's August to get a breeze. We were so hot we'd sit not moving in front of a big fan. (No a/c yet) No birdsong though.

    3. Ah, those sweltering days before air conditioning. That's a major reason why I got my chores done early in the summer so I could spend almost all day in the pool.

    4. I hope you can go into the pool sometime this summer. I keep imagining myself swimming in Chicago's Lake Michigan, a 10-minuted drive from our apartment. Just put down a blanket and dive in, no blazing sunlight or salt water as in NYC's oceanfront.

  4. Yes, I'm a fan too. Although I haven't gotten one for my place - it would have to be a smaller size than most, but it could still work. I'll have to give it some thought.

And there's a porch swing scene at the end of Bull Durham that's a particular favorite, too 😁
