On My Radar: Stuart Turton's The Last Murder at the Edge of the World!

Stuart Turton is one of those authors who's been on my radar for awhile now. He has the sort of inventive mind that comes up with stories that intrigue me. With his next book to be released, he's created an idea that's really caught my imagination, and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a copy so I can read it. It's the sort of book that may not be everyone's cup of tea, but once in a blue moon, I like to read a story about what would happen if the world was coming to an end. I know. See what I mean about it not being everyone's cup of tea? Let me tell you more about it.

Available May 21, 2024!

Synopsis:

"Solve the murder to save what's left of the world.

Outside the island there is nothing: the world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched.

On the island: it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists.

Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay. If the murder isn't solved within 107 hours, the fog will smother the island—and everyone on it.

But the security system has also wiped everyone's memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer—and they don't even know it.

And the clock is ticking."

The end of the world. A deadly fog. A locked room, err... island. A faulty security system. A clock ticking down... Sounds to me that this would make a good movie, too. What do you think?

  1. Hmm....apocalyptic novels usually aren't my thing, Cathy, but crime fiction is, and this does sound interesting. I like the island setting idea, and the plot gets my attention. Hmm.....

  2. I noticed this one yesterday and read the summary about it. Sounded very interesting to me and I've already put it on my list to try when it comes out. Deadly fog...who wouldn't want to know about that? LOL

    1. I've been the victim of a deadly fog or two, but it's usually after Denis eats curry...

  3. It sounds a lot like the plot of some movie I saw back when I was a teenager. Maybe the writer saw the same movie!

  4. It would make for an awesome movie! I like those end-of-the-world books and love that isolated island setting, so I've already got this one on my TBR list. :D Goodreads is even offering a free giveaway of this book...you should enter. Maybe you'll win a free copy.

    1. I don't enter those giveaways. I'm so lucky with the number of ARCs that I get that I feel like I should leave the giveaways for those less fortunate.

  5. I really like apocalyptic novels. They are especially interesting if you read them as "training manuals," I think. These days, you just never know. :-)

    1. I love that! I do believe I've been reading them as a sort of training manual, too, Sam.

  6. I stay from apocalyptic and dystopian books. Not my cup of tea. Fortunately or unfortunately, I'm stuck in reality or as much of reality that crime fiction and regular novels show.

    1. What can I say? Sometimes I need a small vacay from reality.

  7. I'm not usually one for dystopian fiction, but the details for this are definitely intriguing! I'll look forward to your review.

    1. It may be a long wait, Kate, unless it goes on sale soon. :-)
