While Miz Kittling Knits: The Good Karma Hospital

This week's completed knitting project isn't anything exciting. In fact, you could say it's the same old, same old. For some reason, Denis and I have both fallen in love with using afghans on our beds. When he had to move into the guest room because of his back, I made him an afghan for it. A few other projects intervened, but finally, it was time for me to knit an afghan for the king-size bed in our bedroom.

I used my favorite afghan pattern from Mama in a Stitch, the "Knit Squares Blanket Seamless Quilt" pattern which is easy to adapt to different sizes. Since I was making this for a king-size bed, I had to get longer US size 13 circular needles to hold all the stitches because this is knitted in one (very large) piece. I used two strands of Lion Brand Homespun yarn in a favorite color called "Purple Haze", and this is the finished afghan--

As you can see, it fits nicely on our king-size bed, and now I know exactly what Denis means when he says this is the best sleeping afghan he's ever had-- it's sheer bliss to sleep under this! Knowing that it's 100% acrylic and all I have to do is throw it in the washer and dryer to keep it clean and smelling heavenly is icing on the cake.

After making that gargantuan afghan, I'm now working on a shawl, although it's so much smaller that I feel like something's missing as I work on it. I also have plans for more afghans, and they will all be different patterns. It's going to be a while (or the right person making a request) for me to use this favored design in the foreseeable future.

What was I watching while I was knitting in a purple haze? Let's find out!

Denis and I both enjoyed watching Amanda Redman (of New Tricks) and the rest of the cast in The Good Karma Hospital. Here's a synopsis:

"Set in a coastal town in tropical South India, The Good Karma Hospital tells the story of junior doctor Ruby Walker, who arrives in India looking for a job and a distraction from her heartbreak. She anticipates the sunshine, the palm trees, and picture-perfect beaches. She's even prepared for the sacred cows, the tuk-tuks, and the Delhi-belly about which everyone warned her. What she doesn't expect are the realities of work, life, and even love at an under-resourced and over-worked cottage hospital."

Good stories, good acting, the scenery is lovely, and I loved learning more about Indian culture. I'm hoping there will be another season to watch in the near future.

  2. Beautiful afghan. And in my favorite color, too! We watched "The Good Karma Hospital" last year and quite enjoyed it. I have been on the lookout for another season but so far there is nothing.

  3. Beautiful afghan! I love sleeping under an afghan, too. Growing up, I had one that my grandmother made, and I loved it so much I wore it out. :D

    1. I have three gorgeous afghans my mother knitted. When I was a child (before my mother taught herself how to knit), I loved to sleep under the crazy quilt that my great-grandmother had hand-stitched. It was used so much over so many years that it didn't survive either.

    Hospital to be found?

  5. A good friend of mine is of Indian descent, and the purple in your afghan is her favorite color, so I had an added smile thinking of her as I read this post :)

    1. Purple is one of my favorite colors as well. I didn't realize how many people loved the color until I began sharing photos of my knitting. :-)
