| Acorn Woodpecker |
Decades ago when I first started hanging hummingbird feeders outside my windows, I mistakenly assumed that I would just be attracting hummingbirds. I never dreamed that sugar water attracts the wide variety of birds that it does.
This isn't the first photo I've shared of a non-hummingbird hanging out at the hummingbird feeder, and it won't be the last. This one is a bit different because it wasn't taken here at Casa Kittling but at the cabin Denis and I used to stay at in the Mule Mountains outside of Bisbee down in Cochise County Arizona just a few miles north of the Mexican border.
The owners of the cabin didn't put out the feeder themselves, but there was one in the pantry for any visitor who wanted to, and Denis and I certainly did. The cabin was shaded by scrub oaks and visited by all sorts of wildlife at all times of the day and night. Staying there was a delight for this critter lover, especially when I could take photos of fellow visitors like the acorn woodpecker above. I guess he needed a break from his acorn diet, eh?
That is such a nice photo, and that woodpecker must have appreciated the treat. Too bad you both can't go to the cabin in the Mule Mountains any more, but you've got the photos and memories. I feel like a Google wrangler right now. Next it will require my rank and serial number.

DeleteI love that 'photo, Cathy! And that cabin must have been such a warm, welcoming place for birds and other critters to visit you. I'll bet they wrote up all sorts of great five-star reviews about it on all of the critter social media sites. I know your own home is just as warm and welcoming, too. My guess is, all of the animals five-start your home, too!
ReplyDeleteI often spent the mornings sitting outside with camera, book, and iced tea at the ready. Mule deer would come within six feet of me, there were all those birds, and more than once I had little lizards sunning themselves on the toes of my shoes. I loved that place.
DeleteI've known birds of other kinds to visit my nectar feeders but I don't think I've ever seen a woodpecker of any kind feeding there. Wow!

ReplyDeleteNo, the owner no longer rents it out, and I doubt that our health problems would allow us to go anyway. I love Cochise County-- so much to see and explore!
