While Miz Kittling Knits: Sherwood

It's actually chilly in the evenings here at Casa Kittling, so knitting a large, all-in-one-piece afghan is no longer an exercise in trying to stay cool. Now it's nice having a soft, warm blanket across my legs. Nothing can hold my interest like knitting an afghan in the evenings, so working on those smaller projects didn't last very long.

Here is the latest work to come off my bamboo needles.

The free Seamless Quilt pattern I found on Jessica's Mama in a Stitch blog became an instant favorite the second I made an afghan using it for the first time. This time, I used US size 15 circular needles and two strands of Lion Brand Homespun yarn in a color called "Painted Desert". I like the colors, but whoever named it had to be thinking of a different painted desert than the one in here in Arizona because the colors are all wrong!

Here, you can see it folded and stretched across the foot of our king-size bed. This afghan is incredibly soft and warm. As I was knitting it, Denis kept a close eye on my progress and claimed it for his very own before I'd even finished. I am happy to say that this afghan has passed the Snooze Test with flying colors, and the snoozer (Denis) is giving it rave reviews. It looks great against the gray upholstery of his recliner, too.

What was I watching as I was knitting Denis's new favorite? A six-episode series on Britbox called Sherwood

This series has already been renewed for a second season, and let me tell you, the first season has an all-star cast. The story of Sherwood was inspired by two actual murders in the Nottingham area of England in 2004, and it really explores how the miners' strikes in the 1980s created deep and devastating fractures in a community that have lasted until the present day.

It tends to be a bit depressing, but the acting is first-rate and the story compelling-- perfect for my evening knitting sessions.

Jessica of Mama in a Stitch has a new afghan pattern out now that I'm itching to start. But first I must finish the piece of knitting requested by a dear friend. Must. Knit. Faster.

  1. That is one beautiful afghan; no wonder Denis claimed it. And Sherwood sounds like a good show and set in Nottingham reminds me of the Robin Hood record my sister and I had and we memorized all of the songs. Some of the lyrics just popped into my mind as I read this post.

    1. There's even someone running around the forest with a bow and arrow.

As for the afghan, Denis is still raving about it. He claims it's the best one I've made.

  2. I love that afghan, Cathy! The pattern's beautiful. The shades remind me of the blanket I crocheted for my daughter when she was an infant. And Sherwood sounds like an absorbing show; glad you've been enjoying it, even if it's a tough show.

    1. I find that my tolerance for depressing programs isn't what it used to be, but the acting and story are so good in Sherwood that I soldiered on and was glad that I did.

  3. Another beautiful afghan, Cathy! I love the size of it. I want to be able to fully cover my shoulders and feet when I use an afghan and it looks like I would not have a problem with that one. Sherwood sounds like an intriguing show. With the subject matter I am not surprised it is a bit depressing.

    1. I've always made afghans longer than what the pattern calls for for the same reason as you: I want to be able to tuck the afghan under my feet to make sure they stay toasty warm, and then pull it all the way up over my head if I want to. In other words, I want to make sure I stay warm! I made an 8.5 foot long afghan for a dear friend who's 6'4". After all, when it comes to afghans, patterns are just guidelines... right?

    1. I do, too-- even if they aren't painted desert colors! ;-)
