All of you who have followed along with me this year know that 2022 has been a long, hard, and often painful, slog for Denis and me. It got so bad that I started having problems controlling my emotions in August and September. I think that's when we knew that getting out of the house and doing something "just for fun" was a priority, not only for the loosely-hinged me but for Denis as well.
When Denis made arrangements for transporting the two of us and our mobility vehicles to the Desert Botanical Garden, he asked me what I was going to do when we got there. I said I'd probably sit there for a minute or two and cry. I didn't, but I can't begin to tell you how many clouds and weights were lifted from my shoulders by being in that wonderful place for a few hours.
Last Saturday, it was all aboard another specially-equipped van, and Denis and I found ourselves wheeling into The Poisoned Pen Bookstore! Between Covid and Denis's health problems, it had been about three years since I'd entered one of my favorite places on earth. When owner Barbara Peters saw me, she came right over to sit and chat, and so did Stan Trollip (half the writing team of Michael Stanley) when he arrived. I was in heaven, and... my eyes did well up with tears, but that was all. Fortunately, my self-control hadn't completely abandoned me.
Last Saturday, I felt more like ME than I have for months. It feels good to make my acquaintance once again.

That's all for this week! Don't forget to stop by next Friday when I'll be sharing a freshly selected batch of links for your surfing pleasure.
Stay safe. Stay healthy. And don't forget to curl up with a good book!
Oh, that is such wonderful news, Cathy! I'm so glad you're feeling more like yourself, and that you and Denis got to the PP. Little by little, I hope you'll have more of these adventures. What a tonic! Thanks, too, for the links. I'll check them all out when I get back from the Baltic warship 'castle.'
ReplyDeleteI thought you might check that out. ;-)
DeleteThe dugout canoe made the news here, so incredible! I am intrigued by the Pompei link too. It snowed this morning-- still on the grass and leaves! A good reason to hunker down inside on my day off and check those indoor projects off my list!
ReplyDeleteSnow? Already? Ick!
DeleteThanks for all the fascinating links. I do look forward to your Friday posts and return to them several times to read the articles. It's good news that you and Denis have been able to get out and about. That is always such a boost to one's mental outlook.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is-- and if anyone's mental outlook needed boosting, it was mine!
DeleteCongratulations on your outing! I'm so glad you're both doing so much better. I had a similar strong reaction when my (outdoor) tai chi class was able to return to partner work, actually touching each other. Even though you've been missing it, you don't always realize just how much until you're able to do it again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the news about the Peacock Room. It's been on my list for a while, so it's nice to know that I can include it in plans for a visit to one of my favorite cities - and to visit some family, too.
That room has fascinated me since the first time I saw photos of it.
DeleteGlad you got out and about in nature and to a favorite bookstore.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Harvee!
DeleteI'm so glad you were able to get out and visit one of your favorite places! Bookstores and books are anodyne for so many of life's stresses and anxieties. Buying new books always helps, to! ;D Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe weekend has been great-- today I got to watch it rain and rain while reading the latest Walt Longmire mystery. Might do the same thing tomorrow even if it doesn't rain. ;-) Hope you're having a great weekend, too!
DeleteI'm going to the PP virtually and enjoying the interviews. Also, saw Oline Cogdill give her fall picks at the Murder by the Book FB page. I got a lot of ideas for books (groan). So glad you and Denis went to a PP event, didn't realize it was the first time in 3 years. And glad to see you got some goodies there. What a nice outing, and it surely bodes well for future adventures at the PP and elsewhere. I just read Runner by Tracy Clark, a bit like Sara Paretsky, p.i. in Chicago who is sassy with the cops, witty and caring about the street people she meets.
ReplyDeleteIf you watch the event with Stan Trollip, you'll hear my voice towards the end. Barbara asked me to put in my two cents' worth.
DeleteWill do. So many PP and Murder by the Book interviews to watch.
