On My Radar: Michael Connelly's The Dark Hours

If you've been with me for a long time, you know that I love Michael Connelly's Renée Ballard mysteries, and if you know that, it will come as no surprise to you that I did a happy dance when I learned that a new Renée Ballard mystery is set to be released this year.

I'm going to get straight to it and tell you more about it!

Available November 9, 2021!
Synopsis:

"There's chaos in Hollywood on New Year's Eve. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD Detective Renée Ballard seeks shelter at the end of the countdown to wait out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. As reports start to roll in of shattered windshields and other damage, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

It doesn't take long for Ballard to determine that the deadly bullet could not have fallen from the sky. Ballard’s investigation leads her to look into another unsolved murder—a case at one time worked by Detective Harry Bosch.

Ballard and Bosch team up once again to find out where the old and new cases intersect. All the while they must look over their shoulders. The killer who has stayed undetected for so long knows they are coming after him.

Sounds like vintage Bosch, doesn't it? And he's the perfect mentor for Renée Ballard. They are two of a kind... Everyone Counts, or Nobody Counts. I've loved that phrase since the first time I read it. Michael Connelly is one-of-a-kind, and you know I'll be lining up to get my hands on a copy of The Dark Hours

Will you?

  1. Oh, this is great news, Cathy. Connelly is such a talented writer, isn't he? He's one of the few that has almost never disappointed me. Good to know this one's coming down the road.

  2. The Bosch books are my favorite series, and Bosch is my favorite fictional detective, so seeing him show up in the Ballard books and in the Lincoln Lawyer books is always a treat...especially the Ballard books because I really like that character and the way she interacts with Bosch.

I may be wrong, but I think the new Bosch series (billed as a spinoff) is going to use the Ballard/Bosch books as its source of new stories. The final Bosch season shows up on Prime this week, and they have already started building the sets for the "spinoff."

    1. P.S. I remember meeting Connelly in Houston's Murder by the Book bookstore when his second or third Bosch book was being published. I didn't know him from Adam, and few others seemed to know him either because I was the only one who happened to be in the store when he was there for a Saturday reading from his new book. Times have really changed for him...and for his fans...in a wonderful way.

    2. I've been looking forward to the final season of Bosch even though I know it's the last. It's good to know that there's a spin-off, and Renée would certainly be a good choice. Bosch is the perfect mentor for her.

    3. Michael Connelly's first event was right here in the valley at The Poisoned Pen. He and Barbara Peters have shared that memory with fondness several times.

  4. Uh oh, there goes the budget. Have to hide the credit card. How does one resist a new Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch book?

  5. Oh, I am so delighted about this new book. I love this series. And I had heard about a new spin-off with the Ballard/Bosch duo on TV too. I've been anticipating the new season and it looks like we won't have to say goodbye after all. :-)

  6. Bosch series, last season, starts on June 25 on Amazon Prime. Then the series coming up with a few of the characters, including Bosch, his daughter, Maddie, and Honey Money Chandler.

I'll be AWOL from other things until the Bosch series has been viewed.

    1. Since this is something Denis likes to watch, Bosch isn't something that I can binge watch. I think it's really good news about the new series.

  7. Can you watch Bosch, but one episode a day. I do not binge-watch hour after hour. I break it up into a few episodes a day. Or I'd be dreaming about car chases in LA, etc.

    1. Denis and I will do no more than two episodes per evening, especially with the NBA playoffs in full swing.
