An If It Ain't One Thing... Weekly Link Round-Up

Robert Burns sure knew what he was talking about: "The best-laid plans of mice and men..." Denis and I have been itching to get back to the zoo because of all the baby animals there are to see, but one thing after another has prevented us from going. If it's not my leg acting up and requiring extra care, then it's Denis catching some weird eye disease where he actually had things growing on his corneas. (If you just screwed up your face and said, "ICK!" I don't blame you.) Needless to say, his eyes weren't up to the outing especially since one of the symptoms of this disease is extreme sensitivity to light. (And if there's one thing that Arizona has an abundance of, it's painfully bright light.)

Now we're both in shape to get to the zoo, and what I feared would happen is exactly what's happened. We've advanced to the frying pan days of a Sonoran summer with temperatures hovering right around 120°. Now it's too blasted hot to meander around the zoo in the blazing sun and wilting heat. If I were of an age to be sitting in a high chair, I'd be tossing my bowl of strained veggies across the room and screaming fit to rattle the windows.

But I must be an adult about it whether I want to or not. Instead of doing any further whining, I'll show you my living room nest, complete with side bolsters on the daybed and that new table I asked your opinion on last week. The almost unanimous opinion was that table #4 was the best option, but I went with table #2. I liked the book shelf that made it look like a library table as well as the look of the wood, and as you can see in the photos, it does what I want it to do. I didn't choose #4 because-- even though the wheels locked, I thought they'd manage to find a way to be a major pain, and from the photos, it didn't look as sturdy as the other choices. Now I'll shut up and show you the photos.

  1. Oh, no!! I'm so sorry things went wrong with your plans, Cathy! How frustrating! I'd send a dish sailing, too. I do love your living room nest through. It looks so comfortable and welcoming. You've done some nice things with the space. Now, I'm going to check out that Roman basilica. And then those Viking treasures...

    1. I think the thing I like most about my "new" space is the fact that I keep finding more ways to use it and more things I can do in it.

  2. I'm so sorry about the 'smashing' of your zoo plans. Hope Denis's eye improves. Well, this too shall pass - the heat I mean. Hey, I love your little 'book nest'. Looks very comfy and I also like the new table. Enjoy!

    1. I have been-- and I would not have been able to had we not replaced all the windows in this old house!

  3. The temperatures are making me think twice about a lot of things, and ours aren't even approaching 120 degrees! Your reading nook looks great--a comfortable and inviting place to read or knit. Sorry to hear about Denis' eye, that sounds awful.

  4. Sorry to hear that your plans have taken such a serious hit, but looks like you have a really comfortable spot to make the most of all the indoor-time the temps are making sure you have. i've been watching the Phoenix temperatures among about a dozen others...sort of a weird hobby I have is comparing temps from a dozen or so cities around the world. I've noticed recently that your temperatures are way higher right now than the ones in the little oasis town near the Libyan border (deep in the Sahara) I worked in for a number of years. That is hard to believe.

Glad to see that people may be catching on to all the noirish weirdness that is East Texas. I'm very familiar with that Highway 59 corridor and its dark history, a history that is getting darker all the time now that the highway has been designated as the trucking route from Mexico, through the state from south to north, and onward.

    1. If I remember correctly, Highway 59 figures in Attica Locke's books.

  5. Oh my goodness does your reading nook look inviting! I think you made the right choice with the table. Sorry your plans for the zoo are just not happening.

I enjoyed the article by Allison Montclair. Not surprising since I enjoy her novels!

    Have a good weekend!

    1. The Poisoned Pen held a virtual event with "her" when everyone could finally learn the real person behind the pseudonym. I really enjoyed watching it.

  6. A very inviting spot you've got there, perfect for reading. And I say that if I sat in that spot, I'd fall asleep as it looks so cozy.

Hope both of you have improved health. Eye problems are particularl irksome since we need our eyesight to do almost everything, escept perhaps to hear music or audiobooks.

Hope things perk up for your household for the summer. And maybe someday you can stand in your pool and read? Or is that too far off now.

    1. Once all the open wound on my leg close up and stay closed up, I should be good to go for the pool, thank heavens!

  8. And you've seen several doctors about it, and done what has been recommended.
I hope you can see the birds from your vantage point.
