April 2021 Additions to My eBook Stockpile

I'm getting behind on writing blog posts, mainly because I've been enjoying lolling on the daybed reading books. It's been a long time since the living room has been used for its intended purpose, so I'm happy to  be occupying it as a primary Elevation Point. I do have to admit that I have to fight being distracted by watching the pair of birds that chose to nest in the top of the large cactus outside the picture window. But I digress. I'll be showing you more of my "new" space in the link round-up on Friday.

I managed to keep the number of eBooks I added to my digital security blanket below a dozen, so I feel as though I've won a battle of sorts. I've grouped the new additions by genre/subgenre, and if you click on a title, you'll be taken to Amazon US to learn more about the book.

It's time to see what I just couldn't resist!

~~~Short Stories & Novellas~~~
World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil. See my review. (On a bragging note, I just wanted to say that I can spell the author's surname without looking.)
Tehran Noir edited by Hossein Abkenar. Set in Iran.
~~~Non-Fiction~~~

Northumbria at War: War and Conflict in Northumberland and Durham by Derek Dodds. Not an odd choice if you know that I have ancestors who lived in Northumbria, and I have a friend who lives in Durham.

~~~Fiction~~~
The Exploits of Arsène Lupin by Maurice Leblanc. Set in France. I was inspired to read this after watching Lupin on Netflix.
~~~Historical Fiction~~~

Gift of Diamonds by Roberta Seret. Set in Romania. This choice was influenced by a reader. Ev, was it you?

~~~Historical Mystery~~~
A Lady in the Smoke by Karen Odden. Set in England. Odden is a local author, and after having seen her multiple times at The Poisoned Pen and watching her interview others for the bookstore's events, I knew I had to read one of her books.
A Killer in King's Cove by Iona Whishaw. Set in Canada.
~~~Thrillers~~~

The Venetian Legacy by Philip Gwynne Jones. Set in Italy.
Hawke's Prey by Reavis Z. Wortham. Set in Texas.
Snap by Belinda Bauer. Set in England. I read and enjoyed the author's first three books and decided it was time to get back to her.
The Scorpion's Tail by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Set in New Mexico.

That's the list! I have a quick question for you: Did you enjoy reading why I chose certain titles (besides the fact that the price was right), or did it not make any difference? Inquiring minds would like to know.

  1. I really do enjoy reading why you choose the books you do, Cathy. It gives me a perspective on them, and that helps me decide whether I want to read them, too. And your choices this time really do look interesting.

  3. I do enjoy this feature and reading why you choose different books. I always click on them and read more about them. A Lady in the Smoke stood out for me with this selection. I think I would enjoy it. I have Snap on my Kindle so it is TBR. Read A Scorpion's Tail in March and liked it. When I saw the Reavis Z. Wortham selection, I thought "Oh shoot! Did I miss this book." I must have not recognized the title. I enjoy his Red River series.

    1. The Wortham book is in a different series. Since I love his Red River books, I thought I'd give this one a try. I'm glad to hear you liked The Scorpion's Tail.

  4. Hi Cathy, Good memory, yes that was me who suggested "Gift of Diamonds." I've been missing your blog - for last several weeks, sickness in my family so haven't been able to visit, or read. You know how that goes. Stuff can get in the way of our favorite things.
    Definitely, for me one of several "hooks" that draw me to your writing - for me always more compelling that you share your thinking on book choice.

    I'd be interested in knowing the birds nesting in your cactus - big fun.

    1. Stuff can definitely get in the way at times. I hope everyone is well now. It's good to see you back.

      The birds nesting in the cactus are little verdins, and I know from years of experience that they are extremely difficult to photograph. They seem to have a sixth sense about camera proximity!

    1. From the looks of it, I'd better remember why I chose all the books I add to my Kindle! Thanks for your input, Gretchen.

  6. I enjoy reading why a book was chosen.

    Also, I love Preston and Child. I've read them for so long but haven't read one of their books in a really long time. I was just approved for their new one, Bloodless.

    1. I've been diving in and out of Preston and Child for years, and I've discovered that I really enjoy Douglas Preston's thrillers. I read the first book in this new series, so when The Scorpion's Tail went on sale, I wanted to make sure I kept up with Nora.

  7. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you think of Tehran Noir...that Akashic series of collected short stories is one of my all-time favorite series of books of any type. Akashic is even branching out with a new series similar to this one of speculative fiction short stories set in different cities.

    As to your question, yes, I'm always interested in how you choose the books you read because it gives me a little more insight as to whether they will appeal to me or not...unfortunately for my TBR, they usually do.

    1. I really love the Akashic series, so whenever one goes on sale that I don't have, I quickly snap it up.

  8. Another vote for seeing the reasons, please :)

    In this case, they reminded me about the show Lupin, which I need to try for myself.

    Meanwhile, The Venetian Legacy and A Lady in the Smoke both warrant more investigation ...

    1. I don't know what prompted me to ask about the reasons behind my purchases, but I'm glad I did!

  9. Oh, yes, love the pearls of wisdom about why you chose certain books. It draws me in to read more about the books and look here for reviews. And I also enjoy everyone's comments.

  11. I really liked Snap! Jack is a great character and at least one character that I initially disliked changed my mind.
