On My Radar: Elly Griffiths' The Stranger Diaries

I know that I'm not the only Elly Griffiths fan around here, so you can imagine my happy dance when I found out that she's got a new book coming out. No, it's not a Dr. Ruth Galloway mystery and it's not one of her Magic Men series either. It's something new, and I can't wait to read it.

Now... if you're the impatient sort like I am, note that this book will be available in the UK on November 1. If you can wait, it will be released in the US on March 5, 2019. Let me tell you more about it!

Available in the US March 5, 2019!
This is the US cover of Elly Griffiths' The Stranger Diaries, and here is its synopsis:

"A gripping contemporary Gothic thriller from the bestselling author of the Dr. Ruth Galloway mysteries: Susan Hill meets Gone Girl and Disclaimer.

Clare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. As a literature teacher specializing in the Gothic writer RM Holland, she teaches a short course on it every year. Then Clare's life and work collide tragically when one of her colleagues is found dead, a line from an RM Holland story by her body. The investigating police detective is convinced the writer's works somehow hold the key to the case.

Not knowing who to trust, and afraid that the killer is someone she knows, Clare confides her darkest suspicions and fears about the case to her journal. Then one day she notices some other writing in the diary. Writing that isn't hers..."

I really wish they had left out that reference to Gone Girl, but they didn't, so I'll just have to ignore it as useless marketing twaddle. I've always enjoyed a good Gothic thriller, and I'm sure Elly Griffiths has written a good'un.

How about you fellow Elly Griffiths fans-- are you looking forward to this as much as I am? Inquiring minds would love to know!

  1. I don't think I like "Gothic" thrillers. But I don't know what is meant by that. Does it have elements of the supernatural or paranormal?

    1. No. It mostly has to do with the setting-- which should be a big old creepy house or castle.

  2. I do like Elly Griffiths' work an awful lot, Cathy. And I give her so much credit for doing different sorts of books. I'll be interested - very interested - in what you think of this one.

  3. Oh Cathy! I want to join you in your happy dance! I didn't realize that she had a new book coming out that wasn't one of her established series. Wait, I have to do a short happy dance again. Ok, I do like Gothic thrillers. I don't know if it could be classified as a thriller but one of my favorite reads this year was the Gothic suspense read of The Silent Companions. Thanks for the news of this new book.

  4. If you did a happy dance, I've been doing a happy ballet! And I don't even dance or do ballet! When I heard there would be a standalone Elly Griffiths novel, I was pleased. But...when I heard it would be a Gothic-type thriller - yay deluxe! And I shall ignore the Gone Girl thing because apparently people who publicize books don't actually read books and can only think of one or perhaps two books as comparisons for suspense/thriller novels. Me, I could think of several. Gothic to me says perhaps an old house or family secrets or windswept coastal location or a missing journal (there's a journal here) or family secrets or...I'll be quiet now. And, no, I refuse to film my happy ballet for all to see. LOL

    1. You see, I was so excited that I repeated 'family secrets' twice.

    2. So far, it looks as though you, Lynn, and I are performing a pas de trois in a media dead zone. Encore, ladies!

  5. I will read this when it becomes available at the library, but can't wait to read what everyone here says about it.

  6. Yes! My mom loved all those 'classic' Gothic authors--I remember all those Mary Stewart books around the house.

    1. She's an "auto-buy" author for me; when I know she's got a new book out, I automatically buy it.

  8. Gosh, I use the library whenever I can, but it's two blocks away, so it's easy. And the reserve system works.

So, trying to figure out Gothic themes, is it like a Hercule Poirot type or even a locked room mystery where every suspect is inside the house or castle and is not an outsider?

    1. They do tend to be more the locked room type where whodunit is on the premises.
