The Neighbors They Are a-Changin' Weekly Link Round-up

It's been the type of weather here that the talented write poems about. Seems a bit unfair when I stop to think about Hurricane Sandy and all the lives that mass of wind and rain has ripped apart.

Hostess at the Patio Cafe *wink*
Denis and I visited the Desert Botanical Garden Thursday. After we took a good look at the Ofrendas exhibit, we walked to the Patio Cafe and sat in the shade while Gambel's quail and little ground squirrels came up to see if we had food to share. Then we walked along the Desert Loop Trail through the Garden before going home. I downloaded several photos that I'll be sharing with you over the next few weeks. I've already shared the Ofrendas photos, so feel free to take a look.

About three weeks ago, Denis and I learned we have a new neighbor. He's the first person who's ever come up to the house and introduced himself, and I've lived here since 1981. Today Denis learned that our neighbors on the other side will be moving, so it seems more changes are in the wind. Neighbors can contribute a great deal (or not) to the amount of domestic bliss in a home, so I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed!

In the mean time, let me go track down those links for you!

Bookish News & Other Interesting Stuff
  • I would imagine that Amazon realized it would have a long row to hoe when it decided to go into publishing, and-- sure enough-- the giant is finding that its books aren't welcome at many bookstores.
  • Bookstores have become neighborhood meccas. Now that so many of them are closing, can libraries pick up the slack? (I wonder if the writer of this has heard about state governments closing down libraries??)
  • The negative things about the Penguin/Random House merger could be pluses for independents.
  • Why Frankenstein is the greatest horror novel ever.

That's it for this week. Don't forget to stop by next weekend when I'll have a freshly selected batch of links for your surfing pleasure!

  1. Cathy - Thanks, as ever, for the links. I know exactly what you mean about changes when people move in an out too. I hope you'll have nice people moving in; they're going to be the lucky ones.

  2. I really like your weekly round-ups! I especially liked learning about the 20 words book reviewers use too often. I am guilty of using "powerful" and "page turner" too much myself. It is good to read articles like that to force myself to be more creative in my reviews! I hope you will check out my own weekly round-ups on Fridays!

I like your weekly round-ups... and really enjoyed your Take Me Away Saturday featuring Australia!
