Weekly Link Round-Up

The weather here has most people running for cover. It's supposed to reach 116 degrees F. (47 degrees C.) today. I thought I'd go through my cornucopia of links and get them ready before taking my book out to sit in the pool to read. Okay... one more sip of cherry limeade and I'm good to go!

Books in the News
  • Mystery lovers (like me) should be interested in the world's first-ever virtual mystery convention, dubbed the Poisoned Pen WebCon, on Saturday, October 24, 2009. The event is co-hosted by The Poisoned Pen mystery bookstore and Poisoned Pen Press. Fans will be able to participate in live interactive discussions, author panels, on-demand videos and audio presentations, exclusive articles, book trailers, live chat rooms, and other interactive web-based events. For more info, check out the Poisoned Pen Webcon website.
  • Also for mystery lovers, check out the Art of the Mystery, Part One, which contains a fun quiz.
  • In what she terms a "book coveting" post, Claire at Kiss a Cloud brought a series of children's books to my attention that I just have to have. Take a look at the adventures of young Viking, Hiccup, and his scrawny dragon, Toothless!
  • American Book Review has its 100 Best First Lines from Novels.
  • In the Guardian, Chris Hannan talks about his Top 10 Tales of the American Frontier.
  • Amazon has a list of the Best Books of 2009 (So Far).
  • I wondered when this would happen: Amazon is applying for a patent to allow in-book advertising on their Kindles.
  • I've always wanted a secret passage in my house! Here's one created with bookshelves.

Talk about heart palpitations! I got sidetracked a few minutes ago and began doing something else. Naturally the program hung up on me, and in getting rid of it, FireFox closed down. Fortunately Blogger saved my bacon, and this post was still intact. Thank you, Blogger!

I'm going to get out of here while the getting's good. Besides, it's almost Pool Time. See you next Sunday with another batch of links!

  5. It was interesting to think about what makes a good review (Story Siren). I've just always assumed a review is someone telling what they thought about a book. But of course it's much more than that.

  7. Thanks for those links. I'm particularly interested in the most recent round of thinking about negative reviews, and I hadn't seen that post about it.

  8. Great stuff as usual - and thanks for the link to our help wanted post! We've still got 1 slot left - travel or sports or the best you've got to offer - your pick!

I loved the post about summing up a classic in 1 word - brevity is not my strong suit so that was good practice!

  9. Thank you so much, Sheri!! :)

    Rhapsody--I'm glad you liked them.

    You're welcome, Katie!

Kristen--Something tells me that he was exaggerating just a bit! ;)

Lezlie--You're welcome! I really appreciate it when book bloggers do "link round-ups" because no matter how many blogs you subscribe to, you're always going to miss something!

Susan--It is interesting to think about. Book reviewing is more complex than most people think.

Mindy--You're welcome, and thanks for stopping by!

    Jenclair--You're welcome!

Jeanne--You're welcome. I'm glad I could be of help. :)

Bumbles--You're welcome. If that slot's still open, I'll have to give it some thought!
