(Not Necessarily) Bookish News from Around the Globe
- If your name was William Wallace and you lived in Scotland, chances are you were asked to attend the opening of the new bridge at Stirling. (I had to include this, since I'm a Braveheart fan and have been to Stirling twice!)
- Want to see Hogwarts? Visit the new exhibit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.
- One of the last surviving prisoners of war from Stalag Luft III has died at the age of 97. Why am I including this? Because The Great Escape is one of my favorite movies, and this man lived through it.
- Something a little unusual happened here in the Valley this week. We had the movie premiere of Wolverine in Tempe. I had to laugh when I saw that the BBC called Tempe a "backwater" in the daily email that was sent to me.
- The earliest known book jacket was recently found at the Bodleian Library.
- The New York Times wonders if a book is still a book on a Kindle?
- Read how two sisters have breathed life into an old bookstore in Santa Maria, California.
- Have you read about the recently discovered letters of Benjamin Franklin?
- Heard of the Book Army? It's a new site that hooks readers up with authors and books.
- This isn't a conversation, but important nonetheless. Gautami's blog, Reading Room, was recently killed by malware. She has a new blog now, Everything Distils into Reading. That had to be very traumatic. If you haven't done so, please visit her new blog and show her some love!
- Matt of A Guy's Moleskine Notebook has an interesting post about Annoying Reviewer Cliches.
- I've been enjoying Natalie's post about Favorite Mystery Series on her blog Book, Line and Sinker.
- Wendy posted about Accepting Review Books on her blog, Caribou's Mom.
- Jackie of Farm Lane Books wonders if we should continue to pass blogging awards on?
- J. Kaye of J. Kaye's Book Blog started holding quickie book giveaways on Twitter, which I thought was awesome!
- Holly of Bellas Novella pointed me to this article at iLibrarian about 10 Websites for Booklovers.

Nice wrap-up, some interesting posts in there that I just checked out :)
ReplyDeleteWill look at some more now
Thanks for the great post! I just checked out Book Army - and now I'll have to take some time off to investigate everything else! ;-)
ReplyDeleteSuper set of links. I'll be exploring all week.
ReplyDeleteHi Cathy! I just love your blog! And I have posted you as one of my awardees of the Zombie Chicken Award! You may have gotten this already, but I wanted to let people know about your wonderful blog!

Great fun reading your links...thanks for the link to my post :)
ReplyDeleteThat annoying reviewer cliches was an interesting one.
ReplyDeleteWhen is a cliche not a cliche, and when is it a cliche? How common does an expression have to be to be a cliche?
I agreed with some of the commenters that sometimes, say, "lyrical" is the exact word you want to describe text.
Worrying that someone, somewhere is going to accuse me of using a cliche just isn't going to stop me using it!
Thanks! As I commented on the post about blogging awards, I love it when you do these weekly reviews and alert me to interesting things I haven't yet seen. It's a generous use of your time and your blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you for highlighting my post!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great set of links you have there!
Thank you for the award, Suzanne. It is much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThank you, everyone, for your comments. I'm glad that you're finding things of value in these link posts because that makes them easier to do. The book blogging and New to My Google Reader sections are always the most interesting to me, and I think that if more of us did something like this on a weekly basis, the resulting "link love" would be fantastic for getting us "out there"!
