Weekly Link Round-Up

My browsing seems to run in cycles. Some weeks, I'll find tons of interesting tech stuff, other weeks I find more about books in the news or great articles written by fellow book bloggers. What did I find this past week? Let's take a look!

Technical Stuff

Books/Reading in the News
  • The Dictionary Project is a non-profit organization determined to help children be the best they can be in school, and one of the ways they are attempting this is to get each child his own personal dictionary. Read how you can help.
  • If you love books and you love bookstores, you have to check out this site showcasing the Most Interesting Bookstores of the World. This place makes me want to pack a bag, hop a plane and start visiting these bookstores!
  • Like tattoos? Like books? Check out these Literary Tattoos.
  • USA Today has an article about book editors looking to bloggers for possibilities.
  • The UK's Telegraph had an article about women being more avid readers than men.
  • The UK's Guardian retaliated with an article about how to turn men into page turners.
Fun Stuff
Book Reviewing
  • There's been a lot of discussion this week on Twitter about book reviewing. Then I began tripping all over articles about this fine art on the Internet. I want to start with Chris of Book-a-rama's excellent article on How to Write a Review. It's full of wonderful, common sense advice.
  • The Book Examiner has an article about the Top 20 Most Annoying Book Reviewer Cliches.
  • Also at the Book Examiner is the article What's the Purpose of a Book Review?
  • Alan at The Thin Red Line is on a never-ending quest to find the best book reviews in the blogosphere. All content is up-to-date because he uses RSS feeds. I didn't even know this site existed until someone visited one of my reviews from there.
That's it for this week. Tune in next Sunday for the latest edition of Weekly Link Round-Up. I never know what I'm going to find!

  2. Thanks for posting the eye-opening 20 most annoying book reviewer cliches. I think I use every single one. Guess I need a thesaurus! :--)

  3. Glad you liked it, Nick!

Rhapsody--I posted this knowing that I'd just posted a review that used one of the "forbidden" words. They're cliches for a reason; sometimes they're the only words that fit the bill! :)

  4. Again, you have the best collection of links. Whenever I read these, I bookmark them and then try to find to work my way through them. This was just chock full of good stuff!

  5. Thanks for linking to my post! I can't take any credit for the html stuff in the comment script - it's all my husband's smarts.

Great list of links! I saw the article with the forbidden words/phrases too. I think we all fall back on those occasionally. :)

Alyce--You're welcome! It may be your husband's smarts, but you're the one who shared the instructions with us. :)
