Mailbox Monday-- More Gaps in the Bookshelves

More gaps are appearing on my bookshelves. Thirteen books were sent to new homes last week, as well as three more bags full of ones to donate. In return, I received six: four from Paperback Swap, one from the Royal Oak Foundation, and one from winning a contest on Twitter. Here's what I received last week:

--Regeneration by Pat Barker (PBS), the first in her World War I trilogy.

--A Lady's Experiences in the Wild West in 1883 by Rose Pender (PBS), a memoir of an aristocratic English couple who toured the western United States in 1883.

--Silver: My Own Tale as Written by Me with a Goodly Amount of Murder by Edward Chupack (Twitter). Ever want to know what happened to Long John Silver after Robert Louis Stephenson was finished with him? This book tells all.

--The National Trust Handbook for Members and Visitors 2009 (Royal Oak Foundation). Denis and I are members of the ROF, which is really the American branch of the National Trust. Each year we receive the latest copy of the handbook. I always go through this like people used to go through the Sears Roebuck catalog at the turn of the last century.

--When the Meadowlark Sings, The Story of a Montana Family by Nedra Sterry (PBS), a memoir of growing up in Montana through the homesteading boom, the Great Depression, World War II and postwar advancements (like rural electricity).

--The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows (PBS), an epistolary novel that sounds right up my alley, despite all the hype it's received.

If you'd like to see what other folks received last week, click on that hungry-looking mailbox at the top of this post to be taken to Marcia's The Printed Page!

  1. I think you will really like the Guernsery Literary book, other than the title is too long to keep spelling out, but it is a wonderful book.

  5. Inevitably as soon as I clear space in the bookshelves, new books arrive!

Have fun adding the new books to the shelves. I am a bit jealous of your Guernsey book. I know it's been super hyped but I think I'd like it too :)

  6. What an interesting set of books! I'm going to check out the Montana book for my parents as they live there and have a huge interest in local history like that (usually about Lewis and Clark but they will probably make an exception!).

Here is my post if you are interested:

  7. Cathy - I'm really interested to hear how you like Guernesy, that is one that I really want to get and read. A few months back that was really quite a popular book around a lot of blogs.

Congrats on getting more books out of the house - you are a wonderful inspiration!

    :) Wendi

  8. I'm impressed with how many books you've managed to give away! I also think I'd enjoy the potato book with the too long title despite the hype! Enjoy your books!

  9. I've been cleaning out some of my shelves lately too.

The only book I've read out of the bunch is the Guernsey one. I hope you enjoy it.

  10. Thanks for all the thumbs up and good vibes for the Potato Book. (What a title!)

Serena--no that's not my mailbox...I don't want to scare the mail carriers off! It's just my attitude toward the goodies that might be inside mine. LOL

    Thank you very much, Lilly!

Iliana--So far (touch wood) the gaps are staying...and growing. What I really need to do is reorganize my shelves because the number of books on the TBR shelves are outgrowing the space while the number of books down in the library itself is shrinking.

Jenners--if you have any trouble getting a copy of the book, let me know. This one is in very good shape, and I'd be more than happy to mail it to you when I've finished reading it. :)

Avisannschild--Once I made the decision to part with many of my books, it's been a painless process. Of course it took me YEARS to make the decision!

I'll have to check out all your Mailbox posts tomorrow. My eyes are waving the white flag!

  14. Anna-I've started the Potato Book, and it's really grabbed me. I also have a weakness for books set during WWI, so when I heard about this trilogy, I had to give it a try.
