Teeth Grinding Time-- Commercials

We all have things that make us grind our teeth. I listen to the radio while I'm at work, and one of those teeth-grinding moments comes whenever there's a commercial for a car dealership. You know the commercials I'm talking about: the ones where some guy talks so fast at the very end that there's no way in the world you can understand a word he's saying. (And why is it always a guy? Is it because we women prefer to be understood when we open our mouths?)

Of course the fast talker only shows up when the car dealership is explaining the fine print that actually tells us that this deal is in fact too good to be true. Odd that they never want us to hear that bit, isn't it?

I don't know about you, but whenever I hear one of those car dealership commercials, I remember the name of the company so I'll make a point of never going to that place to give them any of my time, business or hard-earned cash. Never. Ever. Within my present or any future lifetimes! Not only do I make a point of remembering the car dealership's name, I usually scowl at the radio and say, "Oh, put a sock in it!" because --naturally-- the radio plays these spots over and over again. Grrrrr!

How about you? Do these commercials annoy you? Do you have any others that just bug the snot out of you? Share with us!

  1. There's a commercial that played on CBC radio that used "much" instead of the grammatically appropriate "many." I got so distracted by the mechanics and never listened to what was being advertised. Ads like that drive me batty.

  2. Jena, you've reminded me of a couple of similar ads that had a lot of air time down here. You're right--they drove me nuts!

  3. Right now, the way things are, I'm willing to cut car dealers more slack than in the past.

  4. My husband always turns off the radio when the car dealership commercials come on. I have a tendency to block them out most of the time, my thoughts busy on more important things.
