Literacy Equals Lower Crime Rate?

It seems the mayor of Salinas, California, likes to think outside the box. With one shooting already in the books for 2009, the mayor of Salinas is pushing a literacy campaign that would make the city the first in the country to require every student to have a library card. Salinas already puts the rest of the country to shame in the percentage of citizens who possess one. It's good to see someone who realizes what the power of reading can accomplish! 1. What a wonderful initiative!
When I was a child (one of five siblings with poor working class parents), I loved our public library. My father took me there when I was five, and I was so amazed that I realized I could have a library card and borrow as many books as I liked FOR FREE!
I would probably have become an academic anyway, but I would not have read 1/10th of the books I devour every year.

  2. Dorte--I was an only child, raised by my mother who received a widow's pension and worked a variety of part time jobs. One of those jobs was as librarian of our small farming community. I literally grew up in a library. I've written a few posts about my memories of the library. If you're interested, click on the Library Memories logo on my sidebar. :)

  3. What a great idea! Let's hope the parents get behind this. What a difference that could make to a town or city.
