Tuesday Thingers--With a View to Review

When it comes to LT (and your blog), do you review every book you read? Do you just review Early Reviewers or ARCs? Do you review only if you like a book, or only if you feel like you have to? How soon after reading do you post your review? Do you post them other places- other social networking sites, Amazon, etc.?

Yes, I do review every book I read, whether I like it or not. Fortunately I do like most of the books I read because I've gotten cannier over the years about the ones I select. I try to review each book within two days after reading it. Any longer than that and my memory tends to get fuzzy, and I just don't have time to write comprehensive notes about everything that I read. I find it fun to review an excellent book while WOW! is still reverberating through my head. I think that element of excitement shows through and will encourage others to read it. Let's face it--we're all addicted to books and reading, and we all see ourselves as enablers with our particular addiction!

After posting a review on my blog, I then post it on LT, Good Reads, Paperback Swap, and in my Yahoo book group of which I'm list owner. I always post the entire review instead of a link, although I know that the link might drive more traffic to my blog. The reason why I do this is because when I'm looking through reviews at sites such as LibraryThing, I want to read the review itself and will pass over links taking me elsewhere. Something tells me I might not be the only person who feels this way. The only time links are posted instead of the entire review is when they're picked up by Twitter and Here Be Reviews.

Thanks to Marie, our very own Boston Bibliophile, for all her hard work in this fun meme! If you'd like to participate or just read more answers to this week's question, click on the Tuesday Thingers logo at the top of this post!

  1. Interesting answers. I find I get smarter about my choices as I get older, like you, so I rarely waste my time on a clinker any more too. :)

  2. I feel the same about links to my blog in LT, although I've posted full reviews there as well as just a link. I'm a book addict too and have to write about what I've loved reading.

  3. I write reviews of all the books I read too Cathy. I find it helps me sort out what I actually thought of the book

  4. I also am very good about picking books that I am very likely to like. In some cases though, the concept will be awesome and the execution...not so much.

  5. Interesting about whether to post a review or a link. I post a link because that's what *I* like. I usually right click on links and open them in a different tab (in Foxfire), so I can continue on in one site before moving along.

  6. I think the 'link' or 'no link' question is interesting, as the recent discussion on Early Reviewers at LT shows...I personally am not so anti-link.

  7. I agree after a couple days the facts of a book do start to get a bit fuzzy. I sometimes will write down a review but it might take a week or more before I ever get around to posting it on the blog. Cathy I hope you have a wonderful day.

  8. I have to review books while they are fresh too. I forget details much faster than I would have thought. :)

  9. I have to review books within a couple of days or else I just won't get to it.

  10. I have to write my review shortly after finishing the book, too. I usually start another book right away and I don't want the 2 to get muddled in my mind.

  11. "we're all enablers" ... so true, so true!

  12. Nice article Cathy. I do not every book I read. Mostly I review the books that are either very good or I have strong critical insight about them. If a book is mediocre, I don't bother to do more than just post a short comment about it.
And I do post the reviews in two places: my blog and Gather.

  13. I'm pretty much the same as you - I choose what I read very selectively. Therefore, I do like most of what I read and write good reviews. I, too, have to do the reviews pretty quickly or I'll forget stuff. LOL

  14. Cathy - like you, I post the entire review - I am not likely to click on a link when other reviews are available. :)
