On My Radar: Michael Connelly's The Waiting!

Michael Connelly is one of my all-time favorite writers who's created one of my all-time favorite characters (Harry Bosch). I well remember wandering the aisles of a bookstore here in Phoenix and idly picking up and then buying a copy of his first novel, The Black Echo. I hadn't even finished reading it when I went back to the bookstore and bought the next two in the series.

With that kind of track record, you know I had to go out and pop a couple of wheelies on the driveway when I found out that there was a new Ballard & Bosch novel on the horizon. Let me tell you more about it!

Available November 5, 2024!

Synopsis:

"Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-three, so the genetic link must be familial. It is his father who was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles.

Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen—a theft she can’t report without giving her enemies in the department the ammunition they need to end her career as a detective. She works the burglary alone, but her solo mission leads her into greater danger than she anticipates. She has no choice but to go outside the department for help, and that leads her to the door of Harry Bosch.

Finally, Ballard takes on a new volunteer to the cold case unit. Bosch’s daughter Maddie wants to supplement her work as a patrol officer on the night beat by investigating cases with Ballard. But Renée soon learns that Maddie has an ulterior motive for getting access to the city’s library of lost souls.
"

Wow! Harry, Renée, AND Harry's daughter, Maddie? I can't wait!

  1. As soon as I read the title of your post, Cathy, this one went onto my wish list. What a great idea for a setup for a novel, too! I really hope to see Maddie 'star' in her own book/series someday, and this sounds like a good start!

    1. I think having Maddie in her own series is probably what Connelly intends to do. At least, I hope so!

    2. If so, I hope Maddie doesn't have to go through what Renee Ballard did with a rapist/murderer. I can't get that scene out of my mind. Don't want to read it about Maddie. Maybe she could do corporate financial crime. But, no, Connelly will want her in action.

    3. Connelly's too good a writer to duplicate something like that.

  2. It's already on my wish list and I'll likely feature it in upcoming weeks on my 'Waiting on...' post. And I'm so excited about it too. I'm delighted that Maddie is being included and I also like Ballard and still Harry is able to contribute. Lovely!

  6. Connelly is one of my favorite authors also (no surprise there), so his newsletter is one of the few that I've signed up for. Which in turn means that this is already on my radar, and my hold list. But I still enjoy the pleasure of sharing the anticipation!

  7. Interesting discussions about medical care between Bosch and the MIT specialist photographing a crime scene.
