If I told you what the temperatures have been like here in Phoenix for the past week, I think many of you locked in winter's freezer would put a contract out on me, so I'm keeping my mouth shut! Plans for finishing up the week are chicken marinara, a trip to the grocery store to stock up some empty spots on the shelves in the pantry, and a visit to The Poisoned Pen to see Dana Stabenow.
I'm reminded that I promised you a photo of the work Denis had done at my desk. He traded in a piece of unused electronics and used that money towards a third monitor for me. Isn't he sweet? This new set-up is perfect for so much of the work I do at the computer-- graphics work (or Tweetdeck) on the left, blog work in the center, Googling and linking on the right. I have to admit that I feel a bit like I'm air traffic control or something, and when a movie we were watching showed a wall of monitors, Denis looked at me and said, "That'll be you soon!"
I'm just not a mobile phone/iPad kind of person. I don't like to be hooked up to gadgets all the time; I want to sit at the computer, get things done, then leave and do something else. If that makes me a dinosaur, so be it!
No... I didn't forget that this is a link round-up!
A Bookish Link or Two....
- Vroman's Bookstore is expanding its Read Your Way Across the USA idea. (One of the fun parts of this is to make your own additions and subtractions to their list.)
- Book Riot has a few goodies if you're in the mood to buy a book-related item or two.
- Here's how to make your own magnetic bookmarks. (They're the only kind I use in my books.)
- This is book-related because Colin Dexter is on the team: I was thrilled to discover that "Lewis" will be returning for an eighth series!
- If you need some cuteness, take a look at these children reading to shelter cats.
- I love this book spine lightswitch cover.
- Is the literary world elitist?
Art, Critters, Archaeology, Astronomy, Travel...
- A star-rich galaxy has been found that dates back to the universe's infancy.
- More news on the German art collector whose 1,000+ piece collection was discovered in Munich. Seems he had several more pieces in Austria for safekeeping.
- I know I've taken photos of a basking rattlesnake, but I don't know if I'd be around to take a photo of a great white shark losing a tooth.
- They've cracked a 900-year-old Viking code, and some of the things they've translated will make you smile.
- A Wire-Haired Fox Terrier named Sky just won Best in Show at Westminster, and that pleases me, since I've owned two in the past. Here are seven reasons why Wire-Haired Fox Terriers should be the Internet's next favorite dog.
- I wouldn't mind staying in one of these old refurbished railway cars in Cornwall!

- 10 restaurants from books and movies that became real.
- The top 25 books that changed history.

That's it for this week. Don't forget to stop by next weekend when I'll have a freshly selected batch of links for your surfing pleasure!
Cathy - What a great desk setup! It's just beautiful to look at and it looks very functional too. And research shows we're happiest when we get breaks from the online life. So if you're a dinosaur, at least you're a mentally healthy one. :-) Thanks as ever for those links. Good to hear the news about Lewis.
ReplyDeleteI should've known you'd be a Lewis fan, too!
DeleteI'm keeping quiet about the temps here in So Cal, too....
ReplyDeleteIt's safer that way, isn't it, Mark? ;-)
DeleteLove this post...thanks for the photo and book information.
ReplyDeleteI am in the freezer/snow belt. Enjoy the nice weather. Sounds like a great end to your week. Have fun at the Poisoned Pen event.
Happy Valentine's Day...stop by my blog if you like to see my FAVORITE books.

My Favorite Books
I did enjoy myself at The Poisoned Pen. Dana Stabenow is so much fun! Thanks for stopping by. :-)
DeleteThis is off topic, but I was looking for a photo this evening, and somehow came across a photo you posted four years ago about your relatives Eugene and Sadie, and his letter home from France. I find these old photo's fascinating, and think about them when taking photo's today. I don't know the reason, but maybe photo's were very expensive at the time, and a luxury, so people got decked-out and were beautiful in the old family photos. Today we all seem to be snapping away with pictures no one will blog about in 100 years :-) Thanks for the article.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it, Steve. Photographs were expensive in those days, so people did take care to look their best when they sat for them. I'm very lucky since I come from a family who saved all those photos over the decades-- I even have old tintypes taken of Civil War-era ancestors.
DeleteLooks great! I used to have two monitors. One died and I haven't yet replaced it.
ReplyDeleteI don't see how you can stand it-- I'd absolutely HATE going back to one monitor!
DeleteYou really look like you're at your command post, seeing all of the world around you, checking on the birds and other critters that come into your environs, while reading book reviews and generally doing everything. It's impressive. (It makes me dizzy. I'm content with one monitor or I'd be confused.)
ReplyDeleteAnd you really do have a wonderful spouse who is only too eager to help you with what you love to do.
That's a good thing to call my new set-up... my Command Post. I love it! Thanks, Kathy!
