A Swedish Solo Weekly Link Round-Up

I have always been someone who loves organizing, whether it's my bookshelves or my closets. Storage bins and my label maker are very good friends of mine. However, I can't say that I do it all the time or that everything in this house is perfectly in its place. Years can go by before I'll get a wild hair to start ripping things apart and putting them back together.

I've been under the influence of my latest wild hair for the past couple of weeks. I guess some people would call it Swedish death cleaning, especially since this mood struck after Denis's death. My beloved family group I refer to as KaDaSuMi (you know who you are) helped me with the lion's share of clearing out so many things that I could not have done by myself. What's left are things that I can handle with occasional help from my visiting nurse, Alex.

I've had to clean up after my grandparents' and mother's deaths, and all three of them were packrats. (For example, I found 116 single socks squirreled away in my grandparents' house.) Denis was a semi-reformed packrat, and I'm just about ready to go through the last of his stash areas.

While I do this, I'm also working through my own stuff as well as all the cupboards, drawers, and anyplace else where things are stored. If something hasn't been touched in years, out it goes to be recycled or donated. I've been moving furniture to make the house easier for me to navigate, and I've set up an area where I can get some of the crafting done that has been piling up. I don't want KaDaSuMi to go through what I have. (Which means that I must have a plan for all my books.)

Labeling my finished knitting projects before putting them back on the shelves.

The weather is finally beginning to cool a bit, and I've been thinking of trips to the Desert Botanical Garden and The Poisoned Pen. I know I need to get out and about. It's good for my physical and mental health, but... part of me dreads going because I'll be solo. Denis has been my beloved companion for so many years that going back to traveling everywhere alone is depressing. Yes, he'll be with me in spirit, but it really isn't the same. I know many of you have already experienced exactly what I'm talking about. However, I lived a good part of my life alone, so I know I can do it again.

Virtual hugs to you all! Enjoy the links!

  1. I can only imagine how different it will feel, Cathy, to go to places like PP or the DBG now. Everything has changed for you. But I think you're wise to get out and do some things. I admire all the clearing out and cleaning you're doing. I ought to start going through some of my things, too. I'm not what you'd call a pack rat, but I have kept my share of things that I really didn't need to keep. I'll start on that as soon as I get back from Belize...

  2. I started decluttering withthe books. I had over a 1000. I’ve kept Austen, P D James and a few other. Not even 25. All other gone. Clothes especially evening särgis gifted. My good crockery, Crystal to my two daughters which is lucky for me. Most parents say children don’t want anything but furniture is going to be the tough one.
P S I really like your links and go back to them throughout the week.

    1. I'm so glad you enjoy the links, Mystica.

As far as books go, I had at least 6,000 at one point, but whittled them down to around 2,000. That's still a lot of books to go through!

  4. You and Denis went to so many places together. Every first trip without him is going to be so bittersweet. Going solo isn't as much fun, but it is good to get out and about. Good luck! And you're so smart to go through all your stuff like that. I go through periods of decluttering myself...though right now I apparently am in the opposite kind of mood. ;D

  6. Thanks for doing the links among all of the tasks that you must take care of. So glad you're thinking about going to the Poisoned Pen and the Desert Botanical Garden, two of your favorite places, even though it won't be the same without Denis. I hope these trips are enjoyable. And as for the cleaning, I wish I could get going on this more than I have.Best wishes for the coming period and that you can enjoy your ventures to some of your favorite places.

  7. I think it's good that you are moving forward and doing a bit of a tidy-up or clear-out is not bad at all. You can remember nice things, but I think we all have much 'stuff' that we don't need. Glad to also hear that you are considering visiting those favorite places. It will indeed be different, but he will be with you in your mind and memories. Take care, friend!
