And I do appreciate your explanation. I can see how that could have affected you as a child.Cathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01774383554326288663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1999659125625323494.post-681333571095543442014-11-02T05:54:48.158-07:002014-11-02T05:54:48.158-07:00I have nothing but respect for the cultures from C...I have nothing but respect for the cultures from Central and South America and the Latino communities in the U.S. But I'm just not into macabre or death-themed holidays or art.

Even with Frida Kahlo, who I admire as an artist and for her principles, I can't deal with some of her more macabre art.

It's just me. I respect everyone's personal taste though.

I think this is because when I was a child, my mother left my sister and me at a production of Poe's The Tell-tale Heart at the local YMCA. The heart was coming out of the wall, pounding and beating. You could see and hear it beating. I still have that imagine. So, I shy away from macabre, scary, horror, etc.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1999659125625323494.post-22218772023177336932014-11-01T12:02:26.622-07:002014-11-01T12:02:26.622-07:00I think many people are turned off by the skeleton...I think many people are turned off by the skeletons, but I have to admit that the ones that I often find macabre don't have a skeleton in sight! And I love the way the artists are very personal about their stories. Where I live, there's a large Latino population, so there are always several Dia de lost Muertos events. I didn't grow up in that culture but like you, I've learned an awful lot just from that art. Some of the art is, I admit, just a bit macabre for my taste. But some of it is beautiful (to me) and all of it shows talent and expresses a culture. I like Hallowe...Glad you found a holiday you like.

I like Halloween, even if it just means getting candy for the neighbors' children -- a cowgirl and a 4 1/2-year-old ambulance, who shared their loot with me. And it's
a day to unabashedly eat the candy of my childhood available right around the corner.

I don't go in for horror of gruesomeness or haunted houses. But I enjoy the costumes in my neighborhood. The New York Halloween Parade goes by near my house.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
