I don't recall abruptness in the speech of native speakers, maybe a slowness. There was a circuitous pattern in their language. Conversations didn't go from point A to point B very quickly. You are right, from what I heard back then, there were so many layers to Wounded Knee story. Always a lot of intrigue on the Pine Ridge, I think--at least back then.
