I'm generally very leery of a strong romance angle in a crime novel. I don't mind the characters falling, or being, in love, but I do like it to be more real-life (and there's nothing wrong with stuck-out ears!). That's interesting that they've both fallen afoul of the law; as you say, that's not usual for a cozy mystery.
